Paint starting to flake in cockpit area - 2006 749

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by DoctorW, Nov 11, 2012.

  1. Hi. The silver/ gun metal paint just under the digital display and in the "arch" under this has started to flake. Bits chipping off in the "arch" and a flap lifting under the digi display. Any advice / recommendations as to what to do to halt this and also thoughts re people to refinish? Could I use a tiny dab of glue to re-affix the 10p sized "flap" - or is that just stoopid!!?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Andrew.

  2. It's a common problem. It's your 'headlamp bucket' that the paint is flaking off. It's cast alloy and over time it corrodes and then the paint bubbles and flakes off. It depends on how you want to address the issue. It's not hard to remove from the bike, strip down using a household paint remover, clean the corrosion off and then repaint. Did mine last year and it now looks like new. But your 'glue' suggestion sounds a bit naff.

  4. Like Shaun said, its not hard to take apart, I had mine powdercoated satin black, looks nice!

  5. Get a nice magnesium one with carbon fairing brackets :upyeah:

  6. Unfortunately the Mag ones are like rocking horse poo.

  7. I had my headlamp unit and mirror support arms power coated black.

  8. Hmmm, that could look good with my carbon supports....

  9. Cheers for the replies all - will hopefully get it sorted over the winter. It's not dreadful at the mo (not really visible unless your tlc'ing the bike) but the bike looks great otherwise so think it's gotta be worth it.
Though the glue was a non starter tbh - just a v temp fix to that particular peel.
Thanks again and at least it doesn't sound too much of a disaster.

    Andrew.

  10. When you do it, I found this diagram useful for when I put it all back together.

  11. Thanks for diagram and pics - looks well smart. Prob bit too much for this "one" armed man, but will look at professional job.
    Thanks again,
    Andrew.

Ps - I have two arms lol but little feeling in left arm and hand and no shoulder movement same side after crash in 2009. Still here and riding (trying) though!! :)
