Hi I have been looking for a good example of an ST4S. The low mileage bikes I have looked at have crankcase paint blistering or peeling off. With a rear hugger fitted as standard I am surprised to see this. I have had sport Ducatis with 3 times the mileages I am looking at without a hint of this problem. Do they all suffer on this model? Is there an easyish way to do a repair?
Is it that big of a deal ? Mine has blistering paint on the cases but its a good example of this model. No there is no effective way to repaint the cases without a strip down of the engine. How can you effectively and thoroughly degrease everywhere unless you do this and is it worth it .
Ok. I was wondering if it had been attempted successfully by removing panels, prepping with rotary tools etc., masking and spraying to blend in with existing. Painstaking, I grant you.
 are you being serious? Ducatis must be one of the most cherished makes on the planet. I would be hopping mad if paint had started flaking off crankcases on one of my bikes. Ok. I was wondering if it had been attempted successfully by removing panels, prepping with rotary tools etc., masking and spraying to blend in with existing. Painstaking, I grant you.
Yup, mine too. at about 30k miles, serious paint flaking on the crank cases. Doesn't hinder it in anyway A
Yes i am serious actually. I am not happy about it happening on mine but its not a big deal and cetainly not worth the effort to repaint the cases correctly. Please show me how good a job you have done when you do yours.
Well I have not got an ST4S yet but it seems almost a pointless exercise searching for one without this paint damage from the 2 replies so far. If I end up doing paint work on one I will do for and after pictures. I would still be interested in understanding why these models suffer so much in comparison to other ducatis I have seen.
Mine is all flaky, quite like it, gives the bike some originality and patina, shows its not been restored, still looks 10 times better than most jap bikes of the same age.
