Painting Or Powder Coating Frame

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by rob6539, Dec 29, 2015.

  1. Hi guys, hope you all had a good Christmas.

I'm knee deep in a very slow 748 restoration project and am now at the point of needing the frame painting.

Could I pick your brains of whether I should get it painted or powder coated? I'm currently leaning towards just having it painted.

    Thank you very much
    Rob

  2. How far are you from Melksham ? Steve Turner (TPCS) will do either to a very high standard. My preference would be powder coating after the frame has been alum blasted/chemial stripped and passivated. Andy

  3. Thanks for the advice Andy.
I'm from Worcester, so Melksham isn't too close, but there are some decent powder coaters local.

Would I be more limited with colour if I have it powder coated?

  4. I don't think so. Someone posted a list of paint codes a while ago and there were quite a few to choose from. I use Steve because he offers the full service which you would need to check when you use someone local. It's a full hour to 90 minutes journey for me but I respect the man and like his work. 5. Try Redditch shot blasting and powder coating, Dave is a Ducati owner and he powder costs for main Ducati dealers.

  6. I've heard really good things about them. I've sent an email but haven't heard anything back yet, guess he's closed shop for the Christmas period. Will try again in the new year

    Cheers

  7. I go for painting, but I seem to be in the minority.

  8. think powder coating is more durable than paint but cant be touched up the same as paint. had a few lil scuffs on my frame (powder coated) and found that in trying to polish them out it dulled the area.. but i may be doing something wrong and havnt got around to asking the chap that did it, if there is a way to fix it..

  9. I agree. Apart from gloss or matt black, he offers a range of colours including metallics. The range is not as wide as you can get with paint though.

  10. What colour are you considering?
Steve TPCS does a nice red that is as good as it gets with PC.

  11. Replying to emails is not there strong point,i always find its best to pop in or phone and yes away until new year, just be aware if you do pop in at any time make sure you go to the right place (they are on the corner) as there is another coating firm next door and they are shite.

  12. Ideally I want it the standard grey colour. So painting should take much less prepping.

Durability is my main concern, as well as finish. But I'd of thought that paint would be good enough durability wise?

  13. Good to know. Thank you!

  14. In your opinion, does the painting seem durable enough for standard road use?

  15. Manufacturers use paint all the time. to my mind -

    Paint
    • Better appearance
    • Can be spot repaired
    • Sharper lines (Not as thick as powder coating)
    • More coloir variety
    Powder Coating
    • More durable
I have a scratch on the frame of my 1098R, close to the LH footpeg. I'm confident I can get a match and spot repair it. Powder coat would leave me snookered.

I've had my MV Agusta F4 wheels powder coated in the past and been perfectly happy with them.

    You pays your money.....

  17. I had a set of Dymags powder coated by Steve at TPCS. Excellent job. He used to work for Dymag so knows all the processes etc very well. He had a good resume of work when I saw him including some very rare Porsche wheels. Recommended
