Hi all, I viewed the 1199s Tricolore few days ago, stunning bike condition wise, tasteful extras, originals supplied etc, fell in love with the bike BUT …on closer inspection, there is a split in the top of the right hand fairing ( see pic ) also the tank panel gap isn’t equal both sides of the tank ( see pic ) Of course alarm bells rang, has it had a bump ?? …salesman called the tech lad out of the workshop , who said it does happen, it’s a stress fracture where the panel sits in the clips, is it a common fault though ?? I’m asking you chaps. Also he said the uneven gaps under the tank are due to the tank not being seated correctly after servicing So, the salesman has got back to me today & said that the panels now line up ‘within factory tolerances’ Is it common for panels not to line up perfectly on these bikes ? Yes I’m a fussy sod, I admit that, part of my ocd condition unfortunately Can you advise here guys
It's possible the split in the upper side fairing has been caused by some heavy handed removal of the inner fairing ducts, where someone has tried to remove them without properly releasing the hooks from the small slotted tabs moulded onto the upper fairing. That or they have not been refitted correctly and the fasteners overtightened. Ask to check the slotted tabs under the inner ducts for damage. In any case I would be asking for a new panel or a substantial discount.
As an aside, the split fairing in your pictures appears to be the LHS (when sat on the bike) not the right as you state. Are you saying both sides are damaged? Also in your first picture, the wires that run down the frame and that should sit inside the small cut out in the duct are poorly routed, these should be zip tied together immediately above this cut out so as they all fit inside it. It looks as though one of these wires is trapped between the duct and the frame which is NOT ideal. The clutch hose is less critical in terms of resistance to chafing, but that said you should mention this to the dealer. Any dealer that tells you the fairings fit "within factory tolerances" is talking BS. There is no such thing. They either fit (assuming they have been fitted correctly) or they don't. If not then there is potentially a more deep rooted problem or unseen damage preventing correct alignment. The 1199/1299 series particularly on the LHS can have all sorts of problems with panel fit if the wiring loom that runs down the nose fairing to the frame is poorly fitted or if removed poorly re-fitted in it's past. A workshop manual is invaluable to spot such errors as it will explicitly show you exactly how wires, clips, zip-ties should be located. The routeing of wiring on modern bikes is a lot more critical than it used to be, either due to space or design constraints or heat protection.
No probs. Just don't give the dealer any scope to fob you off. Ask to check or examine the bike more closely if you feel it necessary, as it's your money after all. If they are not happy to let you do that then walk away.
