  1. Pedrosa appears on Spain's tax debtor list

How do these super rich people get into these situations, greed or stupidity?

Honda MotoGP rider Dani Pedrosa has appeared on Spain's top tax debtor list, which includes 4,855 names of people owing more than one million euros to the country's tax authority.
Pedrosa is listed as owing 7.8 million euros.
Spain's tax agency sent out a letter to individuals and companies owning over one million euros earlier this year to warn them that their names would be made public on the list released.
Pedrosa, 30, finished fourth in this year's championship, in his 10th season in the series, taking victories in Japan and Malaysia.
Former FC Barcelona player Gabriel Milito and former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz are other sport-related figures appearing on the list.
The Spanish Honda rider is not the first MotoGP figure to run into alleged tax trouble in the recent years, with a number of high-profile Italian racers having previously been accused of tax evasion.
Among them are Valentino Rossi, who had to pay 35 million euros as settlement; Loris Capirossi, who was unsuccessful in appealing his case in 2010 and had to pay a fine of 2 million euros; Marco Melandri, who had to settle and got a 19-month suspended jail term; and Max Biaggi, whose case is currently ongoing.
All the aforementioned disputes involved riders allegedly claiming a fictitious residence in foreign countries.

  2. Surely their managers/agents are the crooks as they are the ones that normally deal with the bureaucracy and advise accordingly?

  3. nothing new
top racers have often 'lived' in tax havens like andorra and Isle of Man to avoid paying tax

  4. It's just as well that Premiership footballers are obliged to appear publicly in the UK every week, so they cannot plausibly claim to be resident is some tax haven. Otherwise none of the buggers would ever pay tax on their astronomical salaries.
