Picking Up My First Ducati, It's A 848

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Stu848, May 18, 2016.

  1. Evening all, well I'm about to hopefully buy and pick up my dream bike I've wanted since they came out on Saturday and was wondering if anyone had anything I should look out for other than the obvious. I am mechanically minded but only on Jap bikes.

Great forum and loads of help already.

    Thanks in advance

  2. I would say just don't let any little problem 'develop' and you will be fine, just keep on top of making sure that furry electrical connectors etc are clean but overall they are fine. I had an issue where my Fuel pump relay failed because it had corroded, they sit behind the battery and are easy to soak when washing the bike and then they fail. and if it's an early bike, make sure it's had the radiator replaced under warranty as they had some issues with leaking radiators.

Got any pics? I had a 2013 848 Evo and enjoyed it a lot when I wasn't commuting!

  3. Appreciate the reply, right o I'd read about some electrical issue so I'll have a look at them when I'm there.
It's a 2010 model non evo but I've already got my damper sorted and the guy has some monoblocks I'm thinking of having off him so couldn't warrant the extra grand and half for evo model myself.

    Thanks pal.

  4. Welcome!

Get the monoblocks or buy some 4 pad radial callipers as fitted to 749/999R and RSV's (much cheaper) as the original 848 brakes are pretty wooden.

Spooky that you got a bike that matches your name...some kind of destiny stuff going on there....

  5. it's got slash mount Termis' which is great, and tbh some people prefer the standard 848 on the road, it's a less 'top end' engine. The essential mods mate are 14t front sprocket, and a clutch slave cylinder such as Oberon, and perhaps a grippy seat as you slide around a lot on those standard ones!

Honestly I would bother with the brake upgrade, yes the Evo's brakes are unbelievable but a good bleed and some decent pads and those calipers will be fine. Best of luck

  6. Haha I showed the Mrs my name and said it was fate... Now I'm getting one!! Spooky!!

He is doing them for a really good price but I'll have a play first and see how they feel, have a tinker with bleeding them and go from there, don't want to do everything all at once as then I'll have sit a table and talk over tea in house.

Got a ntr sport rear shock also so I should imagine setup is gonna be fun so will have to scan the forum regarding that if I put it on.

    Cheers.

Think of anything else just yell

  7. Hi Stu and the rest of the forum!

(Hopefully) I too am going to be a 848 owner this Saturday! Awfully excited I must say. Your potential bike looks stunning. If only the weather was looking nicer!

  8. Also, reading a number of reviews it is recommended to get the suspension set up properly.

I live in London, although am from South Manchester... Where shall I go for this?

  9. Yeh tell me about it, it's been a slow week and only Wednesday!!

Thanks, I hope it looks as good in person as the picture does, suppose to be mint. Was planning on riding it home but I don't think it's suppose to stop raining all weekend so picking up in van sadly :(

Hope everything goes well with yours.

    Stu.

  13. Don't think I will be back up for a little while but will certainly check them out.

Hopefully things should go smoothly on my side. I am however riding her home 4 hours from London!

  14. Welcome Daves and thread moved

  15. Loads of places broadly around the London 'region' like MCT on stowmarket (might be a little way out but well worth it) or pdq in Maidenhead. Sorry I can't give you more in central london

  16. Hi, had my 848 2 years, I commute April - October on it. Just done a 600 mile mini tour, love it. Mines an 09 and is completely standard apart from a carbon hugger at rear and suspension set up. I've grown used to the clutch, the brakes are fine for road use (I'm not a heavy braker).

I'd like grippier pegs but the thing I'd like most is a new seat. Other things keep taking priority though. The seat is terrible, especially when braking down hill, makes me load the bars up. I can't bear to put stomp grips on.

The sprockets I can cope with but when they reach end of life I'll be changing as below 20mph it's a bit of a chore.

  17. I changed my gearing because it was hard to pull away without lots of 'chug' and mirror shaking, but also difficult to hold smooth throttle in 30mph zones, this was an evo model though.

  18. Nice looking bike Stu, Saturday must feel like a long wait.

Best performance mod i can recommend to it would be a 7 x 5 plate, reduces a hell of a lot of drag ;)

  19. Welcome....I would say...fixings...ducati fixings are shite....replace whatever you can see with either stainless or ti and especially around the bottom of the bike....a good indicator will be the caliper bolts and rear pinch bolts...plus powder coating of any bits that are around the underneath of the bike...ie my hypermotard...the brake line guide under the headlight, frontward rocker cover (underneath the rad)...on my last hyper the rear subframe needed doing along with the rear footpeg mounts. Most of the bolts around the engine had rusted along with the cylinder head bolts...

  20. Just a hi and welcome from me,
my powder coating time will come a little bit later on I think!!
Enjoy the sun, get used to the bike in the summer and set your garage up and order the bits you want by October, November, then enjoy next spring on a better feeling bike
    Cheers :upyeah:
