V4 Pikes Peak How To Adjust Chain Correctly

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Sicilian, May 26, 2024.

  1. I decided to check the chain tension on my V4 Pikes Peak today, looks to me a hanging a bit low.
Its currently measuring approx 40mm from the plastic rail to centre of the chain. Sticker on the chain guard says 27 ÷ 29. So to be clear I'm measuring from the inner face of the plastic rail to the centre of the chain.

I'm assuming the above is correct and its actually way too loose?

  2. So I'm measuring for the face of the base of this plastic rail. See photo.

  3. Have you not got the gauge ?

  4. The gauge in the puncture kit bag looks like is for a Multi V4 with dual swing arm as it slots in above the plastic guide rail. Can't see where you'd use that gauge on a Pikes Peak with single swing arm, unless I'm being dumb.

  5. Not sure as had too many issues with my PP , so never checked the chain , but if it’s in the kit it should be the same . Same engine, same drive chain

  6. There’s defo nowhere to slot in the gauge on the PP with single swing arm.

  7. Yes, between the face of the lower chain slider and the rivet on the chain link, mid way between the 2 sprockets. Andy

  8. Ordered a C spanner on Amazon lastnight, arrived by 9am this morning. Adjusted to 27mm, moved the bike a few times pushing down on the tail and taking measurements to double check. Torqued the pinch bolts to 35nm evenly. The chain was dropping to 41mm before adjusting and had loads of chain slap when going through the gears. Took the PP for a quick blast this morning and I can't believe the difference. Better gears shifts and no more chain slap.

I shood have checked it sooner.

  9. Yeah, that sounds too loose for sure. With those specs, your chain should definitely be tighter. Aim for something closer to the 27-29mm range mentioned on the chain guard sticker. Tightening it up should improve performance and reduce wear on your bike.
