I had a wobbling front end going 200 kmh .. What went wrong?!? Did you have similar case? Any suggestions to avoid? (steering dumper?)
I've been fully loaded with panniers & top box and not had that on my 1260. Could it have been poor road surface that caused it ?
Tyre pressures wrong. Steering head bearings iffy. Axles nut torqued up properly? There's a lot that can cause instability if other riders on the same bike at the same speed in same weather conditions do not experience the same.
The top box is only rated up to about 130Kmh, there’s even a sticker inside the box that says that, so there’s the cause of your wobble.
Top box 100% IMHO I’ve had it on my 1260, heavy top box causes it, heavy panniers without top box causes it and poorly set up suspension can causes it too. Had it on my v4 at lower speeds, caused by faulty front tyre from new, dealer changed under warranty and now stable. You’re probably going to have to sort this yourself as the dealer at 120mph will say they can’t emulate the issue, they’ll check all is tight etc, but won’t want to go to a track, autobahn or prison checking they’ve fixed it.
Tyre pressure, luggage, suspension settings, too tight a grip on the bars, tyres (wear/brand etc) These bigger ADV style fast touring bikes are more prone to little differences manifesting as a weave or wobble at speed. My 2013 Multi was observed by others to have a noticeable weave at speed (track day..) which I could feel, even after a pro setup and front cartridge installation. It happens earlier on a GS! Max preload on a fully loaded 2014 GS fixed a weave at around 100mph, at least it moved the speed of the weave to 120ish.
Agree , and why a top box on a PP ?? To add tho , I had the same happen to me at around 135 mph with a 260 soft bag on the back , I had it across the seat , changed it to in line with me on the rear seat and stopped it so could go faster with no wobbles problem solved , I was on the V4s .
I did several rounds of up to 200 mph that day and that was the only time it happened... I felt like that was something triggered by curving or turbulence...
If its the top box (not saying it isn't) why doesn't it happen all the time? even going 200 several other times it never happened before with the same set up
Why not having a top box on the PP? Its my working horse and I use it for fun, travelling, commuting etc...
I think it’s been said that there are so many variables that you are going to have to work it out yourself through a process of elimination. You say it happened once at that speed and not other times so there is a starting point? What was the difference? Maybe it’s even a certain combination of things on that ride like top box, road surface AND wind turbulence …. ? I’d be wanting to know also and it would bug me.
My gut feeling that I felt on the spot was a white van that was ahead of me on the right lane on that curve that created turbulence together with the turning factor... this perception was corroborated after watching the video... unfortunately these variables we can not easily control... My take home message is having a good spacial awareness, avoiding highspeeds in general (specially with top boxes, passengers, side panniers etc..) and being always prepared to react when the worse happens
Could you prove the turbulence theory by taking the route again at the same speed when the road is clear ?
I cannot be described as a ‘small person’ and turbulence following other van type vehicles at speed has always been an issue with my 1200. Knowing the issue, is the biggest step to finding a solution. I’m fortunate enough to be able to choose my routes and not follow vans and lorries. Andy
Eventually I may try...Today the bike will go to the dealer so they can sort out other "technical" potential issues (tire, wheel bearings...) will repeat again when the bike is back next week.
The MS has all the aerodynamic efficiency of a brick. Then you put a rider on it, sitting high, with loose fitting jackets etc and then affix panniers and top box, which again are more air brakes than anything else. Oh and a screen and fat knees sticking out.
but at 200 kmh ... I meant that me personally the top box is ugly , and also the wobble will be caused by the top box being used over the recommended speed, \Ducati would and have tested it and this is the reason for the sticker.
