Plastic trim panel removal

  1. Voltage Monitor/ Trim panel removal

That small panel to the right of the dash (opposite side to the fuse box etc)....two fixings....look like plastic allen screws.....

........are they those push in things with a central 'push in more' spreader metal pin?

In which case I assume it is push the spreader pin back up to get them out?

  2. The early ones were actual allen bolts. Mine was cracked and I've picked up a second hand one which must be from a later bike than mine as it appears to have allen screws but they are dummies, and behind them is a plastic stem instead of which is held in place by a pronged washer which grips it. I presume the washer would pull off with a pair of pliers from underneath.

  3. Thanks, saw the washer and the parts book says 'quick fastening' showing a separate pin....

So on the later one you have are the screws moulded into the panel? Or are they separate?

PS The left side are definitely screws, I assume because of the fuse box and trip meter cable knob.

I bet if I pull that washer off something will break.......

  4. You're right, screws on the left hand one and moulded heads on the right. The dummy thread shaft on the underside just goes into a push fitting, you can use anything like a spring washer etc. if you want I have some m4 an 5 spier clips which i can send to you if you fancy using bolts instead. I did in the end, I'll take some photos of what I did to mine to show you.

The fuse box side uses black flanged self tapping screws which match the moulding on the right hand side.
    Hope this helps :)

  5. A photo of the right side would be handy, thanks.....I think I have enough fixings to re-do it........but I'll admit I'm being lazy and don't want to remove the fairing again, so I was investigating before I start pulling (and breaking)......I want to see what space is available under that panel, fairing on, looking fom the top.

    Thanks AL.

  6. On the right hand side you've pretty much got fresh air apart from the two relays on the fairing cradle. The biggest pain is grinding the heads off the plastic, if you go this route drill out the 4 or 5 mm hole before you grind as it just means its in the right place from the word go.

But I'll get some photos up for the morning for you so you can see.

  7. Cheers.......

...and guess what? I think there is a metal pin in the centre of the 'buttons'...but too dark to experiment now.

  8. Hmmm mine had a plastic stud, but let me get the photos done and posted up.

  9. I THINK I used a screwdriver to tweak the washers off the plastic screws when I refurbed my fairing frame? Will have a look in the garage in the morning, I have a spare one somewhere?

  10. Well.....mine has a slight scratch (no, I didn't do it trying to get it off....it's been there since I bought the bike)....

  11. With brake lever off...

  12. AL.

Couldent work out how to remove mine, tried all sorts, in the end drilled and replaced with allen key nuts and bolts, looks like the pic above :)

  13. Paul, you pretty much did the only thing you can do, as its all moulded in on the underside. To get it off you would have had to prise off the crappy bit of tin which is the push fitting on the underside, which bites into the plastic stud- not really designed for removal once fitted.

  14. Cheers Both / All......

  15. Yer tis:

I think I used a small electrical screwdriver to tease up the tabs on the black retainers, once off I pushed them back into place, they worked ok again when refitted? :upyeah:

  16. The metal retainers on mine broke....and WTF do the rubber pads do?

Anyway, I drilled the pins on mine off, shaved off the fake heads with a very sharp blade, couldn't locate my M5 speed fasteners, so I drilled the b*gger and used two M6 button heads and nyloc nuts (but I put the rubber washers in as well so I didn't have to tighten the nuts too far.

Button heads are now painted black....too shiny in stainless.

I just fitted one of thos thing LED voltage monitors....guess what, I didn't use a relay because I found a suitable unused connection......

....and I was right....my bike charges on idle, which is what I thought it had been doing and rode with lights on to counteract it.

Haven't tried without lights on at revs higher than 3K yet, but I reckon it might green/red/green/red etc etc

Thanks all, for the pics etc.

  17. No worries, the m5 spier clips I added as it was just like the pic 470four before that. You can get black stainless fasteners- I'll see if I've got some for you. Now you come to mention it handy place to dump a dial!

  18. What did you have the monitor voltages set at? Good thing to fit, must get one (or add it to the list, lol ) which connection was this?

  19. Stock settings...couldn't see any point in having the seller change them......

The connection? Got an RR51? If so, you will have two red/black wires + 'plugs' left over (should be in the harness on the left side somewhere near where the headlight subframe bolts to the frame)....there is a single plug/connector = Live permanently...It's the one direct from the battery with the 30AMP fuse.

..and there is a double flat connector, with the staggered plug end.......white wire from the RR51 should be in one socket, and the red/black is defunct, but is an ignition switched live.....wanged the monitor red into that and earthed the black on that same subframe bolt.

Bl**dy bright it is though........maybe get the smaller one......

  20. Ooooh!........Fanks......

My spier clips (the ones I could find) were for self tappers........and not really large enough......The bigger ones that I did have, I think got used on someone else's bike........d*mn.
