Just a drip at the minute, but we all know what happens next. This black item has a drip from the lid. I am assuming that there will be a seal in the lid and that the best time to open it to replace the seal will be when the system is off and cold. The real unknown to me is will it be under pressure when the system is cold?
I’m not a plumber in any way but there should be a red tap like the one in the picture on the other side of the filter. If you turn them both off then the filter should be isolated . It may be easier to replace the filter rather than replace the seal but I wouldn’t know.
having just fitted similar i feel confident to say, as already said above, if you can isolate either side of the "MAGONE" device when cold, then there will be little pressure to deal with, and looks as though you can drain bowl water off at the bottom probably with a radiator air-bleed key or open-ended spanner around 6 or 7mm..
Once isolated the blanking cap at the bottom of the filter can be removed. This doubles as the key to release the drain tap. Make sure you have something in place to catch the black gunge that will come out. From the picture it looks like the magnet is leaking (black knurled thing on top). The magnet should unscrew. This has an O ring that can fail. Replace O ring.
better still https://forum.buildhub.org.uk/topic/17809-grant-mag-one-filter/ https://www.heating-parts.co.uk/s-239060/grant-o-ring-magone-filter-vm12-x/
MagOne lid seal sorted, BUT - one of the red isolation taps is now dripping, so I now need to know if there is a seal on it and if I can sort it without creating a Geysir in my garage, Or is it time to give in and get a professional in?
that's a pain, they can decide to drip when they're disturbed. Admittedly it's the first sign of it failing, but depending on how fast the drips are, it might just eventually stop dripping within a day or two. So you have two choices you could observe possibly with something underneath to catch it if possible or as you say, it's time to isolate it further up the system and change it out for a new one or a new seal, see what the others say but I usually just change the whole thing. Have you drained down the system before yourself? It's not that bad a job, again, wait for others to reply also.
As the above comments, just a flat rubber washer or tighten it up slighty but hold the plastic body as you do it.
It stopped dripping once the system came on and got warm. I will check the empty bean tin I placed under it to see if it has dripped during the day when the system is cold. Thanks to everyone for help.
