1200 Porous Head

  1. Hi all

can I ask... if a 2010-2012 has had both cylinder heads replaced due to the porosity failure, are they considered “fixed”? Or can they fail again on the replacements? I’m considering this MY in the spring maybe.

  2. Once the fix has been done then you can be very confident. I’ve never heard of a repeat problem. Mine were done under warranty (just in time) and they replaced both. They also issued a recall to replace the coolant. It was a combination of this coolant and the original casting of the heads which caused the problem on the early 2010 bikes.

  3. This is a video of mine before it was fixed, most noticeable on cold start up

  4. Thanks
I’d love to hear other owners as to if it’s ever happened twice.
Plus is there a way to check a prospective purchase bike that the heads have been replaced and not rely on the owners word for it?

  5. Mine had both replaced early on and never had a proble after 45000 miles later. Any Ducati dealership will have the warranty record on computer.

  6. Mine have lasted over 100000 km after being fixed at 70000 km. No indication of repeat failure yet.

  7. I had a 2010 1200S, both heads changed at 12,000 miles and then it was traded it in for a 2013 Twin Spark. When I traded it in it had 32,000 miles on the clock and had no other issues (apart from both fork seals) after the heads were changed.

  8. check, yes, the production date of the head is stamped next to the exhaust outlet

  9. This is perfect

  10. Mine (a 2010) went at around year 2 and were replaced. I kept the bike for a further 5 years and the issue never raised its head again. Part of the problem was down to the coolant mixture used at the factory, which was changed along with the new heads. From memory it was blue and changed to pink or vice-versa (?), as an indicator that the correct fluid was put in, post head replacement.
