Evening all Gave my 1200S GT it's first chain clean and lube yesterday. Took it out for a ride today and within a couple of minutes the gear position indicator starts playing up... the neutral light comes on and off, then the indicator gives an incorrect reading. This caries on for maybe a couple more minutes until it just displays first, no matter what gear it's in. Aside from a brief flutter when it thinks its in neutral, all else is unaffected for the 60 or so miles I did today. Just as I'm coming home, I get stuck in lights and at a standstill for about 10 minutes, where I notice (as you'd expect) the temperature rising and dropping as the fan kicks in. Once thought he lights it's just a quarter of a mile before I reach home, and I notice that the problem has gone away! Gears indicated correctly, and I have the neutral light when in neutral again. Would I be correct to suspect that I've had a big gunk of lube land on the sensor that got boiled away when my bike was in standstill this clearing the issue? Would anyone recommend some preventative maintenance/inspection, or should I just not worry about it if it doesn't happen the next time I take it out? Cheers MM
There's a slim chance that you disturbed the connector, but that's a long shot. They don't last long in my experience (mine lasted 4 yrs on my 2018 Hypermotard). I had several rides where the gear position was iffy before I bit the bullet and replaced it. As the working part is buried in the back of the gearbox, a blob of chain lube wouldn't affect it. Edit: I'm referring to the plunger type of sensor, so your 1200 may have a different type.
I had to have mine replaced, there’s a sensor near the front sprocket, mine was replaced under warranty but I don’t think it was a big job for them to change
An update, went out for a 20 mile ride this evening and the problem seems to have gone away, at least for now. I'll continue to keep an eye on it.
