Hey all, I have an issue with my '95 900SS that I hope you can help with! Its been running flawlessly up until yesterday morning, I went to start it and the starter won't turn the engine over. All lights, fuel pump, everything fine when the ignition is switched on, but the moment I press the start button everything goes dim and the starter doesn't have enough oomph to get the bike started. All in all, its presenting exactly as if the battery is discharged, however when I tested it, it was fully charged. Left it on a trickle overnight and still no change. Any ideas? If I bump start it, it runs perfectly fine, just about to go and try jump it with the battery from my Virago now, which will tell whether its the batt in the bike or not. The battery is brand new, incidentally. If it still doesn't start, am I looking at a new starter? :frown:
I had something similar last year, if your cables and solenoid check our then it's worth checking the brushes on the starter. Electrex do a brush kit for about £30.
as above hopefully but could be 'others' - how did jump start go? if still struggling to turn over then don't do it for long as there's a good chance something will be getting overheated, typically starter comm/brush gear or starter/earth leads usually at a junction. (jokes may follow )
Get a pair of jump leads.......earth one well to the engine directly from the battery; connect the battery live with the other lead and then touch the starter terminal (with the rubber cover removed)......that should tell you if it is starter at least (if your battery is any good). AL
Thanks for all the replies. It was in fact the battery after all, dodgy charger said it was full. Derrr. A multimeter revealed the truth!
