1200 Potential (ly Worried) Mts1200 Owner

  1. Hey guys, have been looking recently and noticed that some of the early multi's are falling into the 7k range. I've been tempted a few times to purchase, and sell my RC8. After reading through the Multi section for the last few hours i'm pretty terrified.....:Dummy:

My nearest Ducati dealer is in Dublin, roughly 5 hours away and I've no intention of being on a first name basis with them, never mind subsidising their annual holidays. Would i be nuts to buy a 2010 early model. knowing I'd be doing a lot of the maintenance myself?
    Cheers Jay

  2. Riding a 2010 multi with 8000 smiles, sweet as a nut.

  3. Thats what worries me Mark, some seem to be in great nick, some seem to break hearts! I'll be buying online and sending a collection crowd to pick it up as I probably wont have time to get it myself which has me worried more

  4. Would only buy from main Ducati dealer! Can be an expensive toy if things go wrong.

  5. You could try Millsport in Northern Ireland, good team work there.

  6. Don't forget you only see the horror stories on here and not the hundreds if not thousands that are fine.
Known issues that you should know about.
Exhaust valve sticks, OK if you keep it well greased; treat it like the chain.
Poor low down surging or running, due to exhaust valve and bad fueling to get around noise. EU laws. A decat (also solves exhaust valve problem by removing it.) and remap solve s this 100%, many soldier on either enduring or denying it. I've been told the skyhook model is much better or doesn't suffer, depending on who you talk to.
Poor rear brake, even on skyhook model...lots of fun ideas on improvement.
Dash develops an anyoying glow on the led cluster. No real issue as when the indication is on you can still see it.
31k and loving mine 2010 mts1200s with ohlins.

  7. I personally wouldn't buy a 2010 version, if it hadn't had the heads replaced?

It is the most expensive of all the problems to fix.

You sound fairly "hands on", so a lot of the minor stuff won't faze you anyway?

  8. 2010 Ohlins sport done 9000 miles, pampered bike I must admit, but never had any major issues, and I love it every time I ride it.

Would only change for another one, but goin to wait and see when a new model arrives

As ACT says, you mainly pick up all the horror stories on here, as is the case with most forums

I wouldn't be put off buying one if I was you, even an early 2010, just make sure it's had all its recalls and got good service history and you will be grinning from ear to ear

  9. We've all had problems but all still love the bike's we have (well most of us do) If your going for it make sure you check the log book and as the dealer for details of any problems it's had. I think they have a data base for each bike.

  10. As above. My 2010 ABS has done 20K miles and has never let me down.

By now any issues should be resolved but ensure the heads have been changed as otherwise that is a high risk item, full service history is also essential. May be worth taking out a warranty (about £350).

  11. yes...

  12. General maintenance is no problem, and by the sound of it preventative maintenance will be as important lol! Its a toss up between the multi or a 990 SMT at the mo but love the looks of the multi! Spotted a '10 model here recently but found out it has a bit of a chequered past. They seem pretty rare on this side of the water

  13. A chequered past isn't necessarily a bad thing, the more parts that have been replaced / picked up on by the owner and throughout warranty the better

You'll find in some of the early bikes parts replaced under warranty were for a newer designed part, better they've been done than not
