Hi Im looking to trade my fireblade in for a HM 796. I used to own a dorsoduro before the blade and i cant stop thinking about it. The v-twin, the stunning looks and most importantly the riding position. Ive spotted this 796 local to me and i belive they are very similar to the dorsoduro (maybe better??) Got a few questions before i go ahead with the deal. How hard are the cambelts to change? How well do they survive a few British winters? Any known faults or issues that are common to look out for? Whats the MPG? and what are like for touring? what are the luggage options and what are they like with a pillion (not always, just when the mrs wants to come along) sorry for the million question, but where better to ask than a on a forum full of day to day HM owners Thanks Nick
Love to be able to help but cant comment on that model, have a 821 sp which is the dogs.... surprised you you have had no replies on this
Hi I'm quite surprised too, if this was the fireblade forum I'd have several replies. But why buy a bike because the forum is good! Lol Glad your enjoying you mortard!
There is another thread on this forum entitled "Looking for an honest insight" which asked a very similar question regarding how the bikes handle the winter. Suggest you look there. Cheers, Moses.
I've had the Dorsoduro (nicked) and have had the Hyper for just over a year. Mine has mods such as exhaust and tail tidy. It's lighter than the Aprilia and does about 15 more miles per tank, around 110 before reserve. The electrics can be "fun" in a eccentric way. I wouldn't recommend it for touring unless you change the seat padding
I'll answer what I can... First and foremost get an 1100 ...more grunt. Cambelts.....just about to do mine, so I'll get back to you on that one. Winter: this the first winter in my ownership....replaced everything I can see with stainless or titanium. Anything that can be powder coated get powder coated. Allowing for that its weathered well. Mpg: OK. I don't know what it equates to but 3.50 of premium shell gets me about 20 miles or so, my journey to work and back. Although my old 1100s was tuned and dyno'd the petrol economy was way better....my advice is get it dyno'd for that reason....next on the list for my 1100 evo. Eg 2 years ago while at the TT twice over the mountain caning the are out of it cost a tenner. My mate would be putting 15.00 in his tuono. Touting: not exactly touring but the TT I did 1000 miles in 4 days....totally comfortable and that's with the dp seat. Luggage: can't answer that one. Pillion: I had the pleasure of being on the back of my own bike a couple of months ago. Really nice, very comfortable plus the grab handle is one of the best ever. Hope that helps...oh did I say get the 1100....oh yes, I did.....get the 1100....
I concur with comfysofa on the 1100 - I came from a gixxer 750 and the 11 has just enough grunt to keep me smiling. Standard tank does about 120 miles on the 11 but just upgraded (around 500 quid I think) tank so no get about 250 miles. Misses comes on back and has yet to complain of a sore ass (that made me smile) although prior to the side exit termi she complained of a hot ass owing to under seat exhaust. Ducati do a tail 'shelf' so you can put a soft bag on back which is handy. I have full Ducati luggage which gives you a tank bag plus 'saddle bags' underneath - it's not cheap to buy but gives plenty of storage although not lockable or wholly waterproof without inner bags. Only pain in ass is with it being a plastic tank you need to stick the tank cover on for the tank bag which hides the gorgeous corse colours. Don't think tanklock do an adaptor for it. Not aware of any particularly common faults. As for over winter - a fairing on a blade say hides a multitude of sins - it's all out in the open on the hyper so copes well in that regard. Acf50 is probably your friend along with titanium bolts etc. Hope this helps.
Just picked up an 1100 and I can honestly say, get one it will change your life. Obviously I have no long term experience, but the early signs are looking good.
thanks for all your replies. although i would love the 1100 that's not an option for me as there isnt any in my area who are willing to trade my blade in for. But i believe the 796 will serve me well, the aprilia 750 put a grin on my face, so i imagine the HM796 will also do that thank you guys - ride safe
i bought a 796 to go next to my r1 and 748r,its a great bike prob ride it more than the sports bikes now, get a 796 and fit straight though exhaust and remap it be as quick as a 1100 round the twisties anyway.
