has anyone fitted a power commander on a multi pikes peak 2019 or upgraded the ecu to change the fueling.my multi has been popping/back firing since i bought it in april and last week the exhaust split on the rear cylinderhead, about 10mm from where the pipe is welded to the flange . obviously there is a fueling problem with the bike running rich/lean.
A little history would help here. Are you aware of what the previous owner did to the bike, bought from a dealer, non franchise or private, what exhaust is currently fitted ? Andy
going by the paperwork nothing was done to the bike.sheffield motorcycle centre sold the bike then i bought it from linconshire motorcycles. its the standard exhaust system on it at the moment
At a minimum, have your dealer put it on the diag. A good dyno shop would be able to check your A/F ratio. You may want to take this opportunity to replace your exhaust system in lieu of just replacing the cracked stock header pipe.
A challenge to give meaningful advice without libelling anyone. Clearly the bike should not be popping and banging and the dealer should not have sold you it like that …. if they knew what they were doing. Dundee is your nearest authorised dealer, nearly 100 miles away (?) so a major trek but that might be your only option if you have no warranty to call upon. My first guess would be to look at the O2 sensors to see if they are still connected (possibly under the seat) there should only be the diagnostics port not plugged into anything. Andy
just spoke to a ducati dealer and he said the exhaust valve on these bikes can stay/stick in the closed position. so that could be my problem.
What Andriod wrote^^^^^^^100% Also look at the colour of one of your spark plugs which normally should be milk chocolate brown. If it's lighter, then it's lean and also confirmed by the popping and back-firering symptoms.
if its the exhaust valve i will give it a run and see if the problem goes away. if not there is a local guy i can ask to dyno it
If the in exhaust pipe valve has seized, the performance would be adversely affected and thete would be a fauly code on the dash but it is and easy check. Andy
OK. then it's running rich. Still not good. I concur with Andy about a possible seized closed exhaust valve. However, that being the case, you should have gotten a CE light. A mouse in your exhaust? It's been known to happen.
If the split in the exhaust pipe was there from the time you first noticed popping and banging, then that could be the culprit. Air getting in would affect the lambda sensor reading and alter the fuel/air mix from the ECU, probably making it richer. I had that problem with my air-cooled Multi when a weld on the aftermarket exhaust pipe failed. Getting it welded back up solve the issue.
I think what Coman wrote is most likely. The cracked header may alter the A/F ratio without necessarily triggering a CE.
Unlikely, but I wonder if the bike had a full system, which was removed before sale and the map wasn't changed. I wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference but not sure.
i fitted the new exhaust and tested the bike for about 5 mins, problem is solved. no popping/backfiring. the crack on the exhaust must have been enough to trigger the lambada sensor. spot on conman, thanks for all replies.
