My Multi is not my every day bike, so tyre grip in rain is not a vital consideration but PR3s are getting such rave reviews they seem the obvious choice when replacing tyres. However I hope to take the Multi on a couple of track days and wonder how PR3s would cope. Or can anyone recommend a good general purpose tyre which is good on track apart from dedicated sticky track tyres?
I've heard good things of the Metzeller Z8's - came out better than the PR3's in a recent wet track review...
I am sure i would find my own limits well before those of the tyres. My PR3s are really good, much better than the Roadsmarts it had on before. Z8's have good write ups in the wet but dont believe they give as good mileage.
Thanks for the feedback guys, but regarding the Z8s, as I said wet grip is not a huge consideration. As for the Dunlop D211 ntecs, are these not sticky track tyres?
theyrs two types..the motorsport ones made in britain are the race .....and the french ones are sticky but for road use ...
happy with the Z8's but no real wet tests yet! track : even the OEM piralli's did great... even worn! ... grtz Koen
+ 1 for sportsmarts, super sticky, but don't last long on the multey! I'm thinking of giving z8's a go nxt,,?
I did Donnington earlier this year with PR 3s on. It was snny with heavy showers, the tyre guys said that I had the best tyre for the day. Dropped the pressure a little (on advice from the tyre experts) and had a cracking time. PR3s with good and warm and sticky at the end of each session. This is only the second time I've been on track, but the Multi was ace. I was happy with the tyres, but don't have a lot to compare them to, first time on track was silverstone on a hired gsxr600 with slicks on. I was happier on my own bike.
Just done Donington 31 July with PR3s on, the very same tyres which have taken me to Italy & back 3,000 miles. Luckily the first couple of sessions were wet and raining, and I must say the PR3s were very impressive indeed. Loads of wet grip, now I see why people rave about them. I really had fun. Traction control and ABS also helped a lot. Later on in the day it dried out, so then the PR3s could not compete with what are virtually racing slicks. I set the pressures to 32.5 psi cold front and rear. Usally 36 psi for the road, maybe 38 psi luggage/passenger. Does that sound about right?
Did a dry track day on Monday night at Brands Indy (my first), with PR3's on a Multi 1000 - with the ECU and full Termi I think it makes about 100 bhp at the back wheel. The tyres provided enough grip to get the pegs and toes down, and I'm not a hero. At 30 psi they are a little chewed but I've now idea if that's normal. I normally run 32/35 on the road. Looking at pictures and the tyres themselves, I've got about a 5 mm chicken strip that I didn't use. I suspect if you are good and have the 1200 Multi in the dry you might really chew them up, but then you don't say what Multistrada you have.
If you look at my profile, you will see I have listed my 2011 Multistrada 1200S. Not all that good - too long in the tooth!
Ah, sorry Pete, I was meaning Gerby, your profile is informative! Be interested to hear other people's experiences too! I doubt you're too long in the tooth though fella, at Brands there were quite a few grey haired gnarled veterans who went seriously quickly!
