Hello I've just put the phone down from speaking to e bay .. Some advice here I never knew and would highly reccomend you take on board for purchasing anything of value via e bay and PayPal .. I was close very close to buying a bike on e bay for many Muchly £s ..was told they would deliver it to my door and that they preferred to go through e bay and pp for payment .. That l sounded good! Perhaps too good I thought.. Was going to do an hpi check and all that and sent the engine and frame numbers to Ducati uk to check out.. I then thought being cautious I will call e bay to make sure I'm covered by their protection policy's .. On checking the listing e bay found it had been removed, likely because I had agreed to pay the asking price.. On asking that I am protected by Eb and pp I was told no you would not be because it was a classified listing and not an auction or buy it now... The penny dropped as they say.. The seller offered delivery because they hoped ( me thinking I was protected ) I would pay via PayPal being told your bike is on the way.. Obv it's always best to check the merchandise before you pay, but off you think about it that's why they didn't want cash.. Eh pick up cash on delivery, off I had sent the money via pp thinking it was safe I would be saying goodbye to it.. So if it's a classified sale on e bay at least contact them ( they rang me back ) and get it checked before you think about paying.. Oh and they have thanked me for pointing it out and are involving the police now in an attempt to snare the baddies ... X
Ive taken it a little further now.. I emailed the private seller saying yes everthing is good and I have the cash waiting ready for collection when the bike is delivered.. Im waiting for a reply ... Will let you know if I get one?
Don't forget that you can use your credit card via PayPal meaning if your are unhappy with the purchase you can ask for your money back and cc / PayPal will simply remove the funds from the destination bank account.
I was looking at R1200gs lc last year, like wise on Ebay. Alarm bells rang when they were very keen to deliver, odd! I thought for a private sale, all the way from central Scotland to the North East of England.... ...so I did number a reg number check, turned out to be all wrongggg.....beware.
I thought you were protected directly from PayPal if the transaction goes through them??? Surely that's there business model isn't it?
Mate ... I've asked to go and see the bike! That was not possible as they say they are away working.. I've said cash paid on delivery to mine? No they didn't want that.. I've said I will pay them via PayPal as requested when the bike arrives.. No cant do that was the answer.. It's clearly a scam and I'm stringing them out now to get as much info as I poss can.. If I paid prior to the SO Called delivery, they would have that money out of there and safely into another bank in a flash.. There would be no delivery at all.. PayPal would not back it and I therefore doubt any credit card is going to get you money back on something that's frankly invisible .. If you think about it.. If you want a sale you would make every effort to look after your buyers needs.. Not.. I can't do this I won't do that..
It is indeed... I've tried my best to highlight how I was one click away from a big financial loss and how many innocents may think " oh well I'm covered via eBay and or PayPal " I'm sorry but if you care to contact either they will tell you as they told me today... If it's a classified sale of whatever, be it bike boat caravan or indeed anything that's not, buy it now, or on a bid basis via an auction, you will not be covered by their protection policy.. It's a loophole these life breakers are using to steal from the innocent of their hard earned.. Earlier the seller offered me a guarantee ( after payment to their PayPal account) that if I was not happy after 7 days of having the bike they would pick it up at their cost and return my money.. Really, I may be daft but... Do I really think the bike would ever actually turn up.. Na..
As I say Exige that's what I thought until this morning.. I just thank Bobby Moore (my God) I called eBay and heard it direct from their fraud department.. If it's on a bid basis as per their normal auction process or " buy it now" yes, you are covered by e bay and PayPal .. It's the classified advert where they just place a price, that's where the issue is.. If you look at the icons below the classified listing there's only a " watch this item " icon, there's no buy it now option or any bid option.. Legit company's do advertise their items for sale that way yes, they use it as a way just to advertise the item, you have to contact them yourself and deal, if you so wish too.. I'm sure 99 times out of 100 you will deal with these traders and be fine.. But then I'm sure, or at least hopeful, they will not be looking to grab the money and run, leaving you in one hell of a mess..
My understanding is PayPal cover - Ebay wouldn't - did you ask PayPal. After all, a PayPal transaction is the same no matter where and how you pay - if it is paid through PayPal it should be covered even if direct to someone's email address. Try them, see what they say
I may have forgotten to mention that this scammer is an individual and not a company, eg dealer or garage of any kind.. For every bad one, there's probably a hundred good ones.. But just be very aware..
E bay called PayPal directly mate, so we had a three way conversation and PayPal confirmed and reconfirmed they will not cover any losses on that kind of listing.. As I've tried to say, what they told me was you are better to deal in cash for that kind of listing.. And again Eb and PP pointed out that this scammer was asking me to pay them through PayPal first, or upfront, with me thinking if anything goes wrong I'm covered. By the time my bike does not turn up the scammer will of had that money out of that account and away over the hills etc.. Of course I will not be able to contact them either I'm sure.. So they will have purely used PayPal to move the money across .. Eg The mule.. That PayPal account of theirs would have been set up purely to move that deal then closed.. Another in another name for another day and another scam .. That's basically what both the fraud departments told me today., they also thanked me for passing on all the emails between the seller and myself which they will now try to source ..
I've got a bike advertised on MCN and got a scam enquiry. MCN gets some stick but the sales team were very helpful. They advise never accepting payment for a bike by Paypal or even bank transfer unless you can keep hold of the bike until the money has not only landed in your account but that you've also withdrawn it in cash and the deadline for cancellation has passed because both Paypal and bank transfers can be cancelled by the payer. I didn't know that. I thought bank transfers were final. They're not. They turn up, take the bike and you wake up in the morning to find they've taken the money back out of your account as well.
If you get them to email you not using Gmail, Yahoo or an Outlook address it is possible to trace their IP. That will give you an idea where they are actually contacting you from. Complete email header analysis. Analyse, track ip here
Was this the 1299S that was recently listed by any chance? Seller emigrating, need to sell asap, will deliver for £100, etc.
Very similar mTe .. Bike in England, but working in NI.. Last night I got an e mail saying to proceed with this sale you need to issue me with your PayPal details.... I think not.. X
Clearly you need to steer clear of this scammer. If you can track him and then pass the info. on to eBay and maybe the Police.
