V4 Problem With Charging Ports

  1. Hoping someone can shed some light on this.

When I got my Ducati, these DIN/Hella ports were totally new to me.

Bought one of these to charge my phone and the thing just never worked:

So I started using a USB lead from the popup compartment above the fuel tank and jamming the lid closed over the cable. As I remember, it worked ok for a short while and then just stopped working. I noticed it would charge for 1 or 2 seconds after starting the bike, and then stop charging.

I don't think I ever tried the rear one under the seat.

Looking into it more recently it seems a fuse was blown. I've now replaced that fuse and checked all other fuses on all three fuse boxes and they're all fine.

The popup fuel tank USB port now appears to charge for more than the first 2 seconds as before, although I've yet to confirm that on a proper ride (poncing around with the thing at 10pm at night not sure the neighbours would appreciate me starting the bike, but ignition on appears to be charging consistently).

Rear DIN port works fine with the charger I bought from SportsBikeShop.

However the front DIN still doesn't charge anything. I've tested the voltage and zero. I did notice the inner (+ve?) pins were bent so I must have rammed the plug in there cockeyed the first time which probably caused the short to blow the fuse. I've straightened them, all other fuses still good, still no voltage up front and it won't charge anything.

    Any ideas?

  2. The front and rear DIN outlets run off the same fuse, 7.5A, and can charge/power anything up to a combined 90W between the 2 of them ie between the pair, if they’re both in use, they’re not drawing more than 7.5A. If the demand is greater than that the fuse will blow.

The USB outlet in the tank compartment is a 5v 1A supply on a completely different circuit to the DIN outlets and thus should only be used for a mobile phone, nothing more.

If the rear DIN power outlet is working but the front isn’t then it may be there’s internal damage to the connectors as you suggest.

  3. I use an Optimate Din socket on my front power outlet
Optimate 90 degree DIN plug with 2 USB outlets (nippynormans.com)
Be aware that this lights up with the bike ignition on but only powers items (Camera in my case) when the engine is running and the voltage is higher.
If it a straight plug in then must be the power outlet or wining.

  4. On my 1260 I use a Givi Power Hub but have cut off the DC plug from the end and replaced it with one of the these right angle Hella DIN plugs.

The right angle plug is quite neatly held securely in place by the spring loaded flap on the OEM DIN socket. There's a step in the outer rim of the flap that 'hooks' over the edge of the top of the plug. The right angle aspect means it doesn't foul anything that a straight plug probably would. Not sure how similar the V4 socket is to that fitted to the 1260.

Learnt fairly early on to plug it in with the ignition off after blowing the fuse a couple of times in rapid succession. Works very well for me, though it does require a tank bag. The included gland will work with other makes, you don't necessarily need a Givi one. Have been using this for 23,000 miles now, no issues other than the two blown fuses.
