Problems With Led Indicators

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by bettes, Jun 20, 2017.

  1. hi all
Just fitted some small LED indicators to the bike. All 4 were working ok when I wired them up. Fitted 2 resistors, one either side and the flash rate was ok.
Went for a ride out the other day and noticed that all 4 were flashing at the same time when indicating! I stood back for a moment and looked at the bike just to make sure it hadn't transformed itself into a gold wing or something gay like that. All ok! :bucktooth:
Someone suggested that it might be because the indicator light on the dash is still the same halogen one? Not sure how this would affect it only sometimes if that were the case?
Anyone else had any similar issues? Bike in question is a 998.

    Thanks, ian

  2. I have seem similar problems when all indicators are changed to LED. The warning lamp in the dash is a filament bulb, usually 1.2w, and is wired across the right and left flasher circuits. When the one side is on the warning lamp earths through the bulbs off the opposite side. Since the warning light is a low wattage bulb there is insufficient current to light the bulbs on the other side but LEDs require a very low current to operate and you get the hazard light effect whichever side switched on.
This is the standard set up (ignore the wire colours)

This has been modified with 2 diodes to provide a warning light without the hazard effect.

You could still use a bulb for the warning light instead of a LED.

  3. Thanks for that, Derek. Much appreciated.
Would changing the warning light in the dash to an LED type help or is there a LED type rely available?
Just not used to working with diodes and stuff like that. Wouldn't have a clue where to start...

    Thanks again.

  4. Looking again, mate. Seems easy enough... what kid of diodes would I need to get hold of?

    Cheers

  5. Something like 1N4001 or 1N4002 or similar, around 50V 1A should be ok. You should find something in Maplins.

  6. Thanks again @Derek . so get a couple of diodes, get anther dash light indicator lead and splice the diodes into the lead?

    Cheers, Ian

  7. The indicator warning light has 2 wires going to it, a white/black from the LH side and a white/green from the RH side. You will need to cut both the wires near to the idiot light cluster. Connect one of the wires from the warning light, say the white/back to earth. Solder a diode on to each of the 2 wires from the loom with the ends with the white band both connected to the other wire from the warning light (white/green). Make sure you insulate all the joins, preferably with heat shrink sleeving. This will allow the warning light to operate without activating the LED indicators on both sides of the bike simultaneously.

  8. Thanks a lot mate. I'll see if I can sort it this weekend. :upyeah:
