3 years ago I finish the restoration of my 1994 916 Strada, one out of the first batch, number 114 out of 199... I wanted to build a track bike with road approval to spare the fully restored 916.... That idea got lost along the way, cause I even sold my 916 at some point because this beast had a dream-machine... Handles and rides better than everything I've ever rode... Even the mechanic and owner (racer) of my local Ducati dealership love the agility and responsiveness, it just does everything you want it to do... Goosbumps typing this!!! I just love my bike!! So... Actually I really don't know where to start. This write up will be way to long and boring if I put it up all at once... So I guess I will just post not to much at the same time, that leaves time to tell something about the pictures and if people feel like responding or asking questions I will surely answer... I'm not the type of guy that keeps thing secret, so feel free to ask what ever come to mind... Last thing, Lovers or Haters: I appreciate any kind of comment... So here we go: Bought a 1098S motor with 12000km on it Then looked out for a 748R or 998 frame (beause of the deepV cross member) Eventually I found a 748R somewhere lying on a shelf for years... With registration, so I bought it: The Stock 748R 2 piece Airbox seemed like a good choice, but it wasn't made of carbon and just was to much work to make the plastic work with the epoxy (doesn't tack that well) Managed to get my hands on a complete 848 rear swingarm with hub and rim... Then used a 998 Ohlins and stock 1098 exhaust for testfitment Here I fitted the rest of the exhaust to see how it worked with a 916 subframe I had lying around This has been realised in just a month or so... Whole lot'a ebaying... Fitted my 5spoke alloy Marchesini's to see what it looked like... Swingarm setup was way off... had to figure that one out... But that was a issue that had to wait for a while... Then followed a hard choice... But eventually I did put the saw into a carbonfiber MS airbox... Those things don't come cheap nowaday's but at that point I had made up my mind, I didn't want to regret anything, so only the best was good enough... Had a spare tank lying around for test fitting.... Sure did look like something allready... As said, it had to be something special... Something never done in a lot of ways... Best of both worlds.... So I bought a Ducati Performance Carbon tail: and ofcourse a cover: And a matching subframe ofcourse: Here the 748-998 biposto sub: And here the 1098 sub (still in need of adjustments) I think this is enough for today.... :Shamefullyembarrased:
Cranker has 1198 in an R frame, FE a 1098 I think in a 916 frame, not sure what Nelson has in his hybrids. Lots of shared knowledge
nope, engineered around it with throttle linkage and airbox mod. I think its a S frame in fact, buy not a kyalami deep v. Kyalami easy frame to use. Buy one..........................
I did... Eventually, but we'll get to that later... ;-) True!! Or a 998... Why? Because of the Deep V cross member frame... 748R and 998 motors run on different throttle bodies with douche injectors....
this 748R frame with a bigger engine and a better bigger more modern swing arm seems a good idea.........:Asshat:
part 2, the airbox: The 1098 also uses douche injectors mounted in the top of the airbox. So for the throttle bodies and the injectors to work, I had to build a "one of" Airbox... (#neveragain) I used the bottom part of the 1098 airbox as a mould for the thin alloy base plate As you can see are the velocity stacks bolted on to the base plate, so I had to figure something out... Here you can see the 0,25mm alloy plate laminated with very thin fibreglass weave to have it meet with the MS production Airbox... I can tell you it's a palm sweaty moment when you put the saw into an expensive part like that... It was the point of no return!! At this point I didn't had the radiator to test fit... I can tell from experience; don't start something if you don's have your shit together..... Cause allthough it looked pretty good, it did'n't clear the fans on the 1098 rad... Bummer... So I had to redo the front end... But I did had a good starting point... At that point I also received the 1098 Carbon tail piece, so that brought some extra work aswell... As I wanted the airbox to meet up with the tail as if it was factory... So I made some changes tot the front of the airbox and moulded the front pieces of the 1098 side panels as a mould to line up with the tail... After first layer of carbon it looked like this... Made some injector brackets... And it turned out like this:

With the double fanned 1098 radiator in place, the carbon air runners didn't clear the filler cap... It seemed like every mod or solution I made came automatically with 2 or 3 new challenges (I rather not think in problems) I had to lower the radiator as I did't want to mess with the airflow through the intake runner... Which caused the V piece around the oil cooler not to fit anymore... At that point it started to look like something... Bought Zard slipons for the stock 1098 exhaust, but at that point I allready had my eyes open for a full 70mm system with the zardies... The suspension at this point was just a test fit with a flipped 916 rocker and a shortend ride height rod... Also the fron Ohlins was swapped for a rebuild 1098 set of radials, brand new monoblocks... Some pipe work... From there it went fast... loads of electronics... fitting the 1098 loom to the 998 headlight... And then she was outside for the very first time... Rear ohlins in place but still with a flipped rocker.... But I did have contact with a guy on another forum about an adaptor to get the pivoting point at the same point as the 1098 frame... Also found the solution for my air filters: BMC filters turned out to fit perfectly!! Also the injectors + electronics found their way into the airbox Here she is on my trailer, topped all the fluids and bleeded the brakes and clutch... Ready to get on it's way to my friends at the dealership for initial mapping... First time I tried hitting the start button she fired up right away... Good sign...
