Quick question - starter switch

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by GarySN, May 21, 2012.

1. Hi there.

When the red starter switch is pushed down to perform a 'Key On', should the switch spring back to its starting position?

Cheers

Gary.

2. No, it only springs back about 5 or so mm, you have to then push it up to expose the starter button.

At least that's how mine works!

YMMV!

3. I keep getting a "red switch not released" when I try and stop mine!

4. Oh dear. So that's one 'no' and one 'yes'. Anybody else?

5. I have to push mine back up - it wont go back on its own. Maybe needs a little lubrication but I do it by habit now in any case.

6. I have to push my switch back up as well.....I don't believe it should spring back on its own as I recall being told to make sure it was left in the 'up' position as some early bikes drained their batteries with the switch left down

7. When the switch is depressed to either key ON or OFF it will only partially return and will need to be pushed up to clear the starter button, if the switch is held in the down position it will indicate that the switch is not released this was introduced as a software upgrade in the early days and is a reminder to push the switch to the fully up position when the bike is OFF ( as has been said ( bertie ) the battery used to run flat if it was left in the down position for a long period of time).

8. Thanks for all the input. Picking up an ex-demonstrator on Monday (not sleeping much!) and the switch stays in the down position. Wasn't sure how much of a fuss to make about it, but it seems from your descriptions that it's behaving normally.

Only 6 sleeps to go...

9. That's 'normal' operation of the switch but they can get 'sticky' and not spring back that few mm.......

"...during product running tests, we have noticed that, when in its 'down' position, the red sliding switch on the right-hand switch gear may inadvertently remain pressed in when the instrument panel is turned off or after locking the steering. This may lead to an irregular running-down of the battery while the vehicle is off.In order to prevent this possibility, we advise that, after switching off your bike's instrument panel or after locking the steering, this switch be brought back up and left in its top position. We are preparing a software update that provides a warning on the dashboard when the switch remains in the incorrect position."

.....the software update mentioned that should give a Dash warning if the switch is left fully down was released ages ago.

10. I inadvertantly left my red switch down in the off position for a couple of days recently. Remembering the early days when that was a big NO-NO for which the software update generated a warning, I was surprised to find that the battery was as chipper as ever. Presumably the software update addressed the electrical issue too.

11. Has anybody got the warning coming up if they leave the switch down, not present on mine which is a brand new bike collected on Friday, which makes me think that if this is a recent software update my bike hasn't been checked on the Ducati system prior to collection?

12. You only get the warning on mine when you hold the switch in the press down position

13. Ok, I read some where that there is a new ECU update that throws a warning when you leave it down?

14. I have to Flick it up!
