R1 Gearbox Selector Shaft Advice Please... Track Day Fix Required

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by comesunt, Jan 21, 2019.

  1. I'm at Andalucia with circuit Moto. My mate's R1 is playing up with gear selection.
There was a broken part on the gear shirt shaft that we think we've fixed; however it's still unwell.
Someone at the track suggested that it is critical to have the selector drum (and therefore the gears) in neutral when you replace the shaft.

I cannot think why this would be the case...

I've looked in the workshop manual and it just refers to putting the shaft back in and popping the circlip on.

Our current thoughts are that the gearbox may be fucked; but will re-strip out the clutch and re-insert the gear selector rod if it is critical to insert it in a particular position...

    Thoughts greatly accepted.

I expect some well deserved dits about shite Jap in line fours in a Ducati forum; but my mate, who's bike it is, has previously raced Ducatis, so he's part of the club! :)

I'd just like to get him back on the track so I can put it all over him on my 959 :)

    Cheers,

    Bob

  2. Be very careful (assuming it’s the current r1) they’re known for shitting crank shafts on track.

    Pricey job to fix

  3. Weren’t they recalled for that (and the gearboxes)

  4. Its an old one, 2008...

  5. Pretty sure a lot of r1 owners are fairly pissed off about it. Yamaha don’t seem to acknowledge it, but there’s been stacks of failures.

Not the only issue with the bike either
