R1200gs Adventure To Mts 1260 Enduro

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Rossi46, Sep 7, 2019.

  1. The time has come to consider changing my bike. I currently ride a 2015 BMW R1200GS Adventure, my last 3 bikes have been GSA’s, but this time I’m having a look around at other marques.
So far I have ruled out the Africa Twin, the Triumph Explorer, the KTM Super Adventure and the Yamaha Super Tenere, which leaves me stuck between another GSA and a Multistrada 1260 Enduro.
Because of the spec I would want the Ducati comes out a couple of grand more than the BMW, the BMW comes with pretty much everything whereas with the Multistrada I would want, travel pack (currently offered free), the enduro pack to give me crash bars and spotlights, and a top box (£1000 for a top box !!!).
The thing that worries me with the Ducati is the value 3 years down the road, do these things really depreciate that bad ?
Has anyone else here come from a GS Adventure LC ? Was the change a step forward, or a step back ? Would your next bike be another Multistrada or would you go back to a GS ?
What are the “essential” things I would need for the Ducati ? I’ve already thought of pannier and top box inner bags and a sat nav mount, is there anything else that everyone seems to add ?
Can the top box be purchased direct from Touratech ? I suppose Touratech wouldn’t supply what ever bracket I would need to fit it ?
    Cheers

  2. Can only comment on difference between lc 1250 Gs and 1200 DVT, and only ride on the road.

GS is more comfy, easier to manage from a height perspective (27” seam) and easy enough to ride fast. I’m still getting used to no front end dive.
DVT has waaaay more power, feels more sportbike like in its delivery and the skyhook is a good level above the GS item, with more on the fly adjustability and ability to set your own settings, not what the factory decided. How well it works in comparison is hard to say, as (above) I’m still getting used to the new GS cantilever

Equipment on GS (I have a TE Rallye) is head and shoulders over the DVT. Satnav directions from your phone to the huge, clear screen sir? Of course!

Switchgear use both on par, the mode switches etc on DVT are quite different but, like most stuff, fairly intuitive once you start using them.

In summary: DVT will be easier to ride faster and could do a trackday no problem and hold its own in most groups with the right rider. GS is better equipped, more comfortable and has far better warranty (ime)

  3. Gone the other way in recent years, 1200 multi, now on second gs 1200lc, a 2017. Love it.
BMW finish has been way better. Hold value better. Duke motor more sporty.
Is the standard GS no good? Adventure just feels bigger, heavier etc. Dont really get them tbh unless the 30litre tank is essential.
Single sided swingarm and chain adjustment something I would not consider again after the ease of shaft drive.

  4. Still getting used to shaft. Feels like a lose or knackered chain!

  5. I have no idea of depreciation rates on a Multi Enduro, but if you are worried about it why not not buy second hand? The big loss will be paid for by somebody else which gives plenty of cash for your £1000 top box (what is that all about?).

  6. Have you considered a SuperDuke GT (2019)?

  7. At 6”3’ I’m more suited to the taller enduro type of bike.
I’m now swinging towards a BMW R1200GS Adventure Rallye (GSA number 4) as nothing else seems to tick all the boxes for me

  8. If new go 1250. Imho it is just that bit smoother and the 10hp helps.

  9. And welcome Dave

  10. Welcome to the forum.

  11. Welcome Rossi

  12. Welcome rossi, the top-box & panniers from ducati are touratech manufactured. Although through ducati they come stamped with enduro on them. The main upside along with all the goodies of the multistrada range is the larger fuel tank. I get regular 350+ miles per fill up with max topping over 400miles cruising. They are heavy so some handle bar protection is recommended.

The pannier system I prefer to use beside my metal pannier kit is the touratech (ortlieb) soft-panniers.
