749 Race Clip Ons

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Spjallen, Dec 4, 2014.

  1. Hi guys, has anyone had problems changing over from oem to race bars? In particular the positioning of the brake and clutch master cylinders. I find that the resivour gets in the way and leads to the bars being longer than they need to be.

  2. Yes. Much more of a faff than I expected.

I bent a clip on (Mansfield at Cadwell ...oops). Fitted Renthal. Have got remote Brembo reservoirs, but really want some of those smoked ones from current Monster.

Also fitted a new throttle and a 999r fairing. All,at the same time. Clearance issues still. Lots of fiddling to get brackets to put reservoirs in the right place. Ok now but need some pretty ones making up.

Pm me if you want and it'll remind me to send some pics.

  3. It's the reservoirs that are causing me grief. I think the remote idea is the way forwards. Some pics would be great

  4. Not very bright in the garage

Was a rush to get ready for tt. Been riding all summer so not if signed off. Hence Brackets to be replaced. Ignore the cosmetics ... Don't know why they are not mirror image design .. Brembo quirk. Also will get clear tubing. Looks cooler.

I want to move reservoirs lower and closer to yoke.

  5. Thank you for the pictures. When fitting the remotes how did you connect the master cylinders to pipe that is fed by the reservoir?

  6. When you whip the tops off the reservoirs there is a screw in the bottom that holds it onto the top of the master cylinder. Fluid out. Don't need to completely drain whole system. Screw out. Wiggle reservoir off master cylinder as it has a spigot that locates into front of master cylinder. It's how fluid gets from reservoir to master cylinder.

To fit remotes you'll need a M10 bleed nipple that screws into the hole left by the reservoir mounting screw. You can see this in my photo - has a little rubber cap on. Useful as you can bleed system from the top now as well as down at the calliper.

Also you need a little push in 90 degree fitting that presses into the hole where the integral reservoir located. The tubing then presses onto this with a circlip to lock. This 90 degree fitting feels insufficient but of course this is all the low pressure side. I ordered the Brembo bits n bobs from Bike Torque Racing.

Then fiddle around bending brackets to clear fairing on full lock, clearing clocks (if you're keeping them). You can see the brake bracket is all wrong. I had to bend it other way. I'm gonna make up something in plastic and get something machined or poss little carbon one offs....as I've got R faring etc it would match.

Once happy with position cut the tubing to right length.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Loving your grips, Mileypau. Where from please??

  8. Well I spoke to mode prefermance today after of thread. Hopefully ill have the connectors soon. Thanks very much for the advice it was great to discuss the job required. Lots more to do before the season starts

  9. Happy to help. I've got a pile of receipts somewhere if you cannot get the bits.

Old Rider...these are Progrip Race Grips. From Ducati Mondo in Halifax. £13.50. Lock wired on - not that I'm a racer, just a poser :)

  10. Thanks for that. Nice spot of subtle bling...

  11. Nah mate, don't use the standard reservoirs, they're shit!!

  12. Mileypau - those brackets are massive! You need to fabricate some shorter ones.

  13. I know...embarrassment.

Bike got thrown together before the TT then has done a lot of miles this summer. Bit of a shocker going out to take these pics and reminding myself how crap they are. Much shorter and thus move the reservoirs down towards the fork tops/yoke. Plus some clear tubing and after some of those smoked reservoirs off the new Monster. eBay scanning. Should do the brackets mind....no excuses.

  14. Well after much deliberation I'm going the radial master cylinder route 19 x 18 for the brake and 16 for the clutch. Found a b/m/c now just on the hunt for a clutch one. Thanks for all the advice but the remotes are still obviously gaping so no wasted info.

  15. Another nice simple method for fitting the reservoirs. IMAG1899.jpg

  16. A very tidy job. :) Really like the idea of clear tubing. Looks well posh!

  17. Nice idea....but think it might foul the original clocks.

    Questions questions:
Smaller reservoir (clutch sized) for brakes....just keep an eye on levels I suppose?
Also don't the base of the reservoirs need to be higher than the master cylinder....I guess they (just) are

have you mounted them via the split in the yoke?
Still enough clearance to nip up the yoke on the fork leg?

    Defo,need the clear tube

  18. Oh and what's the other reservoir cap between the two?

  19. Coolant tank.

  20. Answers answers.
That's correct. It's not really consumable so doesn't need a big reservoir.

So long as it's all bled properly there's no issues. But that is part of the reason for clear tubing, to make sure there's no air between the M/C and the reservoir which would prove a disaster as the pads wore.

Yes. I actually use very slim (2 layers) rectangles of carbon fiber with mounting holes drilled through.

They float side to side a little in the space of the pinch bolt gap. It's just one short edge of the rectangle resting on the fork leg that gives support.

I can provide more pictures if really necessary.

Oh, and as you've read, middle cap is coolant expansion tank.
