Hi fellas, I'm building a race 749 and was interested in what gearing you've used whilst racing. 14 39 seems to be popular but quite opened minded 15 41 etc which is a similar ratio andyour explanations why. Thanks in advance. Simon.
Hottrax modern classic. Been reading the Ducati / shazam gearing post and they think 14 / 43. Seems a huge leap. I don't like it too revvy, prefer to ride the tq.
I used 15/43 on my 999R and it would top out at about 155 if I remember correctly but for racing I would have a number of different rear sprockets so that a change of track or conditions would allow you to change quite easily . You can use this to calculate your speeds though .http://www.gearingcommander.com/
Thanks. It's not normally about top speeds though. There are many factors to choosing the gearing. Riding style, wet, dry, revving out and for me stable driveability. I think I'll try 14 on the front and 40 on the rear initially. I've enough spare sprockets to see what works for me on the first test next year, but I'm just trying to save time. Obviously ill have to Tweeks the chain length to accommodate the options. Maybe a link extra will do.
FWIW That's what I'm running on my 848 bitsa and feels good to me. I was running 14 / 38 which is popular choice for the road. If there's enough slack I may try 41 and see how that goes. Just look at the size of some of the rears at a track day! My mates R6 rear sprocket looks like it fell off a hay wain!
Well I went for 14 / 41 in the end and a 98 link chain which is two links bigger than normal. The plan is to be able to also use 40 and 39 on the rear and the chain looks not to long and I should be able to do that. Not sure if there's enough chain to run a 42 but that sounds very revvy.
