Just following up on this thread re the £60 grand Bagnaia and Bautista replicas.. https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/squeezing-the-lemon.93881/ Ducati have gleefully announced that they’ve sold them all within hours,…crazy! https://www.visordown.com/news/general/ducati-sells-world-championship-replica-bikes-hours
I’m not surprised, although I can’t really see that they should be a good investment as there’s nothing special about them other than being limited numbers. Obviously they are not being bought to ride so the ‘value’ side of it is irrelevant. I’d have thought they could have celebrated with some special SL version or something a bit more unique, but I guess it’s easier to pop a few parts on, a different paint job and job done. Were the old Bayliss limited editions produced in a similar way - basically a paint job? I seem to remember the original Foggy bike that I saw in Paul Smart’s showroom all those years ago looked like it was full of carbon and trick parts, but maybe I was blinded by the bling and it was nothing more than parts from the catalogue and a different paint job?
You’re 100% right - They have been doing the limited edition paint job thing for years. Some have been more blatantly a rip off than others. I think charging significantly more for a fancy sticker kit and a limited number on the top yoke is far more abhorrent than something like the Superleggera -where a significant amount of development has gone into it and many of the parts are very special. But at the end of the day if people have the money and will buy these things then manufacturers of luxury goods will continue to target that market and happily take the profit boost that comes with it. None of these bikes are an investment - as I covered in another thread - buying a limited edition bike brand new and storing it unused in the hope that it will make you money makes no financial sense. The only financial winners here are Ducati.
I think (hoping) that because they are able to sell these limited edition premium bikes it helps to keep the cost of the normal production bike down. Probably not but ultimately they have to make a planned return to satisfy their masters.
Yep - business is business and all that! I just think for the eye watering price tag they should have based them on the R or the SP2 - basing them on the S with a few bits and a sticker kit really smacks of corporate greed.
They could have made the Bautista bike a limited run option on the R, which at least would have made some sense. A SL might have been the best option for the Pecco bike. (Edit: probably a new Desmo would be better). As much as I love my SP2, it is basically the S with an options package on it, although I’m not sure how easy the SL wheels it comes with are to buy and if you could just order them for your S. But yeah, easy money and why not.
Well, just had a message from a friend and ducati have confirmed he has an allocation of one of each .........
So they’ve taken a standard V4, painted it, and doubled the price?! Fuck me, that beyond taking the piss
