I think you'll find that if you study the works of Albert Einstein especially his work on space time and relativity it's easy for an idiot to understand that as you approach the speed of light everything slows down and in his theory he states that if indeed you could surpass the speed of light then you will be travelling faster than time itself and therefore travelling into the future, although this would not be by much or even completely apparent unless you travel at many times the speed of light over a sustained period of time. However Einstein and more recently Steven Hawkin both concluded that travelling back in time is impossible. This important piece of research was obviously overlooked by the producers and the film loses all credibility in what would otherwise have been a completely serious and plausible film!
