1200 Rear Brake Light Removal / Re-fitting??

  1. :Doctor: I recently noticed that on my 10 plate bike, the rear brake light had apparently become slightly detached and although not completely adrift, it seemed to rotate about two fixing points either side of the housing and move up and down. I have made the alteration to the bike to stop the underside from moving independently of the rear sub-frame, by fitting additional washers to the four fixing points underneath the seat, as suggested by AndyW, but I don't think this minor alteration is the root cause of this minor irritation.

I can't for the life of me see in the manual anywhere or in the 'MadCogz' website information, see how to get to or to re-fix this rear light, has anyone had a similar problem and if so how did you resolve it?o_O

  2. Tony, remove the 4 screws that you added the additional washers to. This will allow removal of the complete numberplate holder assembly along with the indicators and tail light. It will be attached to the bike by the cables which you need to unplug. I'm not sure if you can access the tail light screws at this point or if you will have to dismantle it further, I had mine apart to change the indicators. There are another 3 or 4 screws holding the upper and lower sections together if you need to separate them.
There have been reported instances of the plastic tags that are used to bolt the tail light on breaking off, hopefully that hasn't happened to yours.

  3. :upyeah: Thanks Derek, duly done as you suggested and found the problem. The rear light mounting points had indeed fractured so the unit was in effect 'floating'. I've since taken it entirely apart and good old superglue has come into it's own, and seemingly worked......BUT for how long?:Depressed:
So I think in the long run it will mean a complete rear light unit, because with the tail section still rattling about, even thought far better with the washers solution, it can only be a matter of time.:Nailbiting:

  4. Well I checked the rear light thing out with Riders in Bristol and after an initial 'that's a recall issue', my potential euphoria turned to angst when I was advised that the statement was incorrect and that a new replacement was £139!!:Wideyed:
After trying to remonstrate that this was surely another example of rubbish Ducati design with plastics deteriorating to such an extent so early in a product's life cycle, that the two very flimsy fixings totally failed, I said I would look at another source rather then OEM. I mean £139 for a relatively simple piece of LED kit, what's going on in the Ducati world I ask you?:Bag:

Any other suggestions rather than paying Ducati so much hard earned cash?
Yes I know that what's you get with Ducati, but it's a red tail light for goodness sake......:Banghead:

  5. Tony,
I noticed the other weekend that Pete (aka rotaxracer) had someting on his bike that might work. He is on holiday at the moment, but might be worth asking him.

  6. These are the only alternatives I've seen for the 1200 tail light;

2010-2014 Ducati Multistrada 1200 Blaster-X Integrated LED Tail Light – Custom LED
    LED-tail-light + indicators Ducati Multistrada 1200 10-14 light smoke
LED Rear Light Ducati Multistrada 1200 Bj 10-13 Getönt Reflector Black E Gepr. | eBay

Item 1 is probably no cheaper than the OEM unit
    Item 2 is currently unavailable
Item 3 is, I think, the same unit but is available and a bit cheaper.

I doubt if the integrated indicators would be UK legal but if in doubt they could be left disconnected with the original items still in place.

  7. Thanks guys,
I'll have a look etc and then decide. I'm going to have a go at a modification to the original to deal with the fixing issue and then see where I go from there. It might just have to be an OEM resolution. o_O

  8. :D Well with a bit of creativity I've managed to make-up and attach a stiffener to the fixing lugs for the rear light and with this fitted, the rigidity of the light unit does look to have been substantially improved. So with some more luck, even if the original lugs crack and break away again, the stiffener will still provide support and retain the light unit in place. So could be job done and no need to pay Mr. Ducati another £130+........

    Result:upyeah:

  9. How about a picture Tony? I really should do something to strengthen mine before it breaks too.

  10. I've just had my rear light replaced, under warranty for the broken fixing issue. I think your £139 is quite reasonable, mine was £151+VAT. (This is the dealer price, not customer) I'm looking at the box right now with the sticker on.

I reckon that has paid for 2/3 of my extended warranty.

  11. :Snaphappy: Bugger, I knew I should have done something like that, now I'll need to take it apart again!!
Only joking Derek, absolutely no problem, I'll take a shot or two and explain what I did to strengthen the fitting positions.:upyeah:

  12. I have just discovered that the mounting lugs on the rear light had broken off! All set to shell out on a replacement LED one (probably the Blaster one) and I though....ah well I'll have a go at fixing the old one! I used "Gorilla Glue", half expected it to fall apart when I put the metal clips back on but it has held up well! I put a blob of Black tack between the top of the light and the tailpiece and that should help! If I don't post again in this thread you know its all worked!
