Hope this comes thru the link. Great example of Redding using the rear on his Pramac. He stamps on it hard, hence it's all Ducati's that have s didgy rear brake Most interesting to me is the point in the corner at which he is using it and just how much force he seems to put thru it Pramac Racing - How MotoGP riders work with rear-brake.... | Facebook
I think so, to help transition from brake to gas maybe, he does back the bike in quite a lot so that may also be part of it too.
I wouldn't say he's stamping on it tbh Looking like he is using it to tighten off a corner imo. Perhaps mid corner it's to stand the bike up to drive off of the bend?? Only so much front brake you can run in to an apex. Who knows, I know in superbikes it's rare to even use the rear. But MotoGP is a different kettle of fish ..
There are a couple of covers where he slams his who foot, not toes, on it and applies a lot of pressure. Others where he is almost at the apex and yet starts applying. I think as said above, that could be to try and settle the chassis for getting on the gas.
On one corner he actually uses the brake level as the foot peg... I read quite abit ago (think it was pre season testing) that they have there rear brake so weak it's nearly pointless having it but just enough square up a corner for drive (like already said^^)... maybe our Ducati rear brakes are more race setup than we thought.
some times it seems so gentle i wonder why he uses it at all unless it is much more active / fiercer than a road bike, but then when he " stands " on it surely it would lock up all together.
My theory...the gentle is to reduce the impact of front/rear bias. The stamping is backing it in/tightening the corner. The reality, who knows, even at 50% he's way above where I have ever been able to ride!!
Funnily enough I spoke to Redding about this when he was at Silverstone. He came past me like I was going backwards, and as he was on a road bike (1299S) you could see the brake light really deep into the corner. I asked him about it later in the pits, and he said he uses the rear quite a lot to increase the engine braking through the corner to help tighten the line up, and on that bike, to then control the wheelspin/slide out
On my last track day there was an ex bsb support rider going round on his road bike 899 who I was attempting to chase and he too ran brake very deep through the bend Must be something in it for some riders
