V4 Rear Brake Pads Question

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by FergusCork, Sep 9, 2021.

  1. Anyone know what the EBC equivalent number is for the rear brake pads on the V4S ?

My rear brake is very weak and am going to change the rear pads to EBC HH to see if that helps.

    Thanks in advance

  2. Define ‘weak’. Previous generations of the Multistrada have, to varying degrees, suffered with rear brake issues. If your V4 is still within the warranty period, this is a dealer issue to resolve. If you are outside the warranty, a simple pad change is unlikely to resolve, what is more than likely, the most common, underlying issue unless the pads were not bedded in properly or have been cooked. Longer term, changing the brake fluid to a high boiling temperature fluid like Motul 660 (other manufacturers available) and remove the caliper and brake line fixings so you can hold the caliper above the ABS manifold when you bleed the brakes. I use a track day spec pad for the front and the best spec sintered pads I can get for the rear. My preference is for Brembo but those riders that are interested, will have their favourite, just like tyres (and please, do not go there :joy:) Andy

  3. Hi there

Bike is quite new - I mentioned the rear brakes being weak at first service. Ducati said that they will bed in etc which I didn't really swallow, and they haven't. They may have a softer street compound in there from new.

I like to use rear brake if entering a corner too hot or sometimes mid corner to recover from an 'oh shit' moment. My 1250GS had great rear brakes - the V4S is very poor by comparison

I'll fit HHs and re-bleed the rear brake and see if there is an improvement

I have since found the code for the pads - FA 181 HH

  4. Your 1250GS uses a larger diameter rear disc so I’m not surprised by that and yes, pad material can make a noticeable difference. Hope you manage to get a brake that meets your expectations. Andy

  5. Thanks Andy

I'll keep you updated once I get the pads fitted

  8. Jesus the tales of their service seems to be the same whomever you speak to , absolutely desperate.

One guy i spoke to that bought a new harley pan america, waterford harley davidson sold it to him after he was in with Harley Dublin 3 times, waterford harley said Harley Dublin are their biggest customers..

Ducati Dublin, my mate has a v4 speciale, an 1198 streetfighter and a v4 streetfighter

mechanic told him there was nothing wrong with whatever bike he was having an issue with he was riding the bike wrong, that it was a racebike...

mate replied it has lights and a reg plate so is not a racebike , and did he think that it was his first bike he'd bopught from them, or even his first bike

then, did you ride it to se if you could feel the problem?

    mechanic...Yes

so mate pulls out phone and shows mechanic the tracker app he has on the phone for the tracker on the bike, mechanic rode it up and down the back of the building once

My other mate, went to Millsport to buy his v4s because of the shocking service

and last but not least , another mate with a 1299, they broke the sump servicing it

  9. I can't speak ill of them so far, but the excuse for rear brake being poor didn't sit well with me - they mentioned there could have been some chain lube on the disc initially etc blah blah.

You'll always read good and bad about dealers (especially online) and there are always 2 sides to every story, and conversely, no smoke without fire etc.

Anyway, for background, I am an engineer with over 30 years experience, and have always serviced my own bikes - in fact I used to run a dyno shop and build race engines here in Cork before the recession hit. So I know when someone is trying to bullshit me about things mechanical and electrical. The only reason I am getting Ducati to do the servicing is to maintain the warranty as the bike is brand new.

My bike is currently on its way back from Portugal via Overlanders, so when it returns, I'll change the pads and re-bleed to see if there is an improvement and will update you all. .

  10. Be cautious using harder compounds in the rear on a road bike. You may not get the desired effect you’re after.

harder compounds are ‘better’ but generally when hot. The rear simply doesn’t get the load to create the heat.

softer pads you may find have better feel also

  11. Update on the brakes
I fitted the ebc HH pads and bled the rear brake from foot pedal to bleed nipple.

After the quick bleed, the pedal immediately felt firmer so there may have been a tiny bubble.of air in there somewhere.

Having ridden the bike for 20 miles or so the rear brake is much improved. Much more stopping action now. A simple fix thankfully
