Rear Brake Pin

  1. The rear brake pin on my ST3 was an absolute sod to remove. When I got it off I found that at the outboard end it has a kind of expanding collar immediately before very end - this had jammed its way in and was stuck

Looking at the parts fiche I cant see the oem pin has such a collar and wonder if it should be like that?

Also my bike doesn't have a window to view the timing marks - again is this normal - think its a bit weird and made me ponder when changing the belts

Finally does anyone have an old short plug socket that came with their toolkit they no longer want before I get the grinder out to a normal one?

    Thanks

  2. I've seen both; it just depends on the model of caliper. I think the one with the expanding collar is the older style whereas the ones with the lip are newer.
I expect that either your ST3 was built during a cross-over period when they ran down existing stock so yours has the old one and not the new one shown on the parts manual, or that a previous owner has replaced a broken/seized caliper with an older one.

Some of the cheaper engine cases don't have timing marks - they cost more to machine the hole and fit an (expensive!) sighting window.
My Hypermotard 1100S doesn't have one either.

You should have a plug socket in your tool kit to fit? If not keep an eye at car boot sales for the right size one - I picked one up for 50p!

  3. Yep its the one with the spring on the top - its a pap design as the collar seizes into the hole!
Thanks for clarification with regards to this and the timing window - not a massive drama but did make me wonder as the service manual showed a window
Re the plug socket - unfortunately not - have put a 'wanted' post up so fingers crossed
    Thanks for the help

  4. I think the pin seizing is a maintenance issue; keeping it clean and lubed will keep it working. Unfortunately it's one of those things that gets overlooked and that's when problems happen.

  5. It's a maintenance thing as Antony says. Give it a clean with some wire wool and refit with a smear of anti seize and all will be well.
There's no timing window on the later bikes. When the belts are done, there's a crank locking tool to time the crank and timing pins fit into the cam pulleys. You can still do the job, but you'll have to make your own timing marks on the cams. The dot punch is still on the lower twin pulley for reference.

  6. Nope , the tool kit one will not fit the rh plugs , machine one down , just sold my st3s gave it to the new owner so can't help.

  7. Cheers guys

Belts done and rear pads re-ordered after I was sent the wrong ones

    Spark plug tool -
    Grinder it is then!

The bike hasn't been meticulously maintained by the previous owner but bought for a song
Have changed out front and rear wheel bearings, clutch slave, belts, pads, and about to change most of the hose clamps as a lot have seen much better days and are slightly weeping. Oil and all filters done. Checked the two plugs I could get off and they are fine - would like to see the other two though

Engine paint could do with a refresh but will do that later in the year after I have put some miles on it
