Rear Cylinder Fouling

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Desmoquattro, Jul 7, 2014.

  1. The rear plug on the ss seems to be getting very sooty and I am changing them often as a result as it starts to lose power. I am getting new jets for the Keihins and moving the needle as recommended by Ducati Kaemna after I got my Sil exhausts from them. It's also got an open air box but no other engine mods.

It smells like it may be burning a little oil but there is only a tiny tiny bit of smoke. Could it be the valve seal or guide? Need to test compression too, I have an adapter for my gunson tester on the way.

    What you reckon?

  2. Edit: I might've got it the wrong way round. lol.

  3. Sooty Plugs = Too rich

Oily Plugs (as opposed to wet plugs) = Rings or valve stem seals failing

Wet Plugs - Far too rich

    White Plugs = Too weak

Light grey - Rusty brown = About right

    Blue Smoke = Burning Oil

    White Smoke = Condensation

    Black Smoke = Too rich

Backfire in airbox = Too weak (or an ignition issue)

Backfire in exhaust = Too rich (or an ignition issue)

  4. Cheers

    Al, very comprehensive!

  5. PS............'Burning oil' is assuming the sump hasn't been overfilled............

  6. If it was that I would have noticed.

    * checks oil sight glass*

  7. Front cylinder OK? I seem to have the same problem with my rear cylinder, it was too rich.(Wish I was!!)

  8. Front appears light brown and a little sooty but the back is black in colour. Might have to investigate the head

  9. Check main needle position.........you would be amazed how many people can't get both needles in the same position.......

Faling that, turn pilot screw in about one turn...
