Hi, I'm getting my suspension sorted in a couple of weeks and want/need to find a rear height adjuster for the 848 as it wasn't stock like the 1098 etc. Can anyone advise how much oem ones cost, recommend a competitively priced quality aftermarket one or point me to somewhere that might have a salvage one (eBay isn't being my friend)? Any advise appreciated as I'm not very well educated on non cosmetic mods! Thanks.
I put a used 1098 one in mine, but even used from fleebay, they are quite stupidly priced for what they are. Hills salvage is probably a good starting place, I think I have their number somewhere. Or you might look at these....don't know how well they are made tho. Ducati Streetfighter 848 - 1198 Ride Height Adjustor Federbein Höhenverstellung | eBay
Thanks for that, I checked out hills and will give them a call. Saw the eBay ones as well but something about them doesn't seem quite right but thanks for the link- might look into it more if I can't find a used one. If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for a used 1098 one? I was going on the assumption that they're about £120-£150 new but perhaps I'm underestimating Ducati pricing.
I bought a replacement ride-height adjuster for my 916 from 'Ceepeedee-racing' on ebay, excellent quality and reasonably priced. They also have them for 848/1198 (same thing but shorter) - worth a look. As above; Ducati Streetfighter 848 - 1198 Ride Height Adjustor Federbein Höhenverstellung | eBay
I can't really remember, but I think it was around 80 quid, but I'm not certain that I'm right....I've bought that much for the bloody thing
I have mine at the stock length. I experimented with different setups but found the stock length was the best compromise. So i would sell you mine as it's wasted, but it looks trick so it stays. Mine came from the ebay US for about £50 but has to fit new rose joints after a year as they developed play.
Thanks for the advice, Are you guys referring to the oem 1098 adjuster or the eBay one? XxAnthxX- thanks for that, £80 isn't too bad relative to the cost of some things! I found one on Hills site so thanks very much for the recommendation. £100 delivered though...
Mines a race one I think, as it has the one adjuster in the middle but don't know what the 1098 one is like
The stock 1098 one has the hex in the middle, a lock nut at both ends and one left hand threaded rose joint and one right hand threaded rose joint. When fitted as you turn the hex on the tube both rose joints move in or out at the same time making it higher or lower. The stock length of the 1098 one is set for about 10mm lower than the fixed 848 linkage. Before I fitted mine, I set it to exactly the same length as the stock 848 linkage while they were side by side on the bench, then once fitted I played around with it from there. It's now set a tiny bit higher than stock but not by much. I'd also strip it all when you get it, cleaning and greasing all the threads as they get stiff from the road shite that gets thrown at it. Don't forget at one end the rose joint and lock nut thread are left handed...
In which case it's probably a std 1098 one then, but even as it is now the rose joints seem way out from the adjuster rod. Not taken if off yet
A quick look at mine says, about 5 threads showing from each lock nut to the rose, and that is after it's raised a midge's dick. Be careful with some of the third party ones advertised, as they are 175mm max (which is stock if I remember correctly) and only allow lowering adjustment, which will give more stability, but taking it up a whisker sharpen's the steering. Yours could be one like that Bradders, extended out as far as it can go. The 1098 stocker isn't owt nice to look at, just plain aluminium with steel roses, no nice anodised body or nuts.
I'm happy with whatever looks wise as long as it does the job so 1098 one will be fine. Im more than happy with the quality of the Showa shock so don't need bling like one might want with the Ohlins unit. Having suspension done at Louigi Moto and was basically told that to get shock sorted for me I'll need the height adjuster otherwise it isn't really worth paying to get done properly. The rear as it it is is stock and ridiculously hard- something that's inhibiting my enjoyment of the bike. Think I need the adjuster not to raise or lower but simply to compensate changes made to the shock. Any other advice appreciated...
Not sure I'd agree if you can't adjust the ride height it's not worth doing. Just a spring weight change, which means the suspension can actually work, is a big positive. Even just making some minor changes without springs can transform a bike
The showa stock spring is too soft, as a rule....but they wind too much preload onto it to compensate. The spring is usually deemed by those that know as a progressive spring, and the excessive pre load on them removes it's working range. Getting it set up properly as Bradders says will make a massive difference, but a more linear spring rated for your weight will improve things further still, without the expense of an ohlins unit......which does make a BIG difference once set up.
Well at my biggest, 23 st with leathers (and a bit) my 1st edition 848 with min preload still didn't have the correct rider sag. Way to firm a spring Conversly, the front is way too soft
And no one had changed the spring prior? Well there you go, I thought the 848 spring was around 80nm stock, which is...erm slightly under your requirement, but you live and learn..... 848/1098 Suspension I'd recommend anyone to visit Dan Kyle's website where this was originally extracted from. Enough info on there to make your mind melt....
Interesting stuff, wish I had a bit more understanding of suspension really- hence why I'm going on what they suggest. Heard nothing but good things about Louigi Moto so think I'm good hands. Im about 11.5st kitted out so prob will need a spring change as well but that's not so pressing as its the ride height adjuster that is pricey if I have to go new from Ducati! Bradders- didnt mean it wasn't worth doing, just I was advised that if I'm paying to get the bike set up properly I may as well get a height adjuster as it will make a fair bit of difference and make it more worth while. I'm just going on what I'm told but any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks
In all honesty I think everyone is exactly the same.... We all live and learn from the experts, so called experts and self professed experts.... If it feels right then it probably is right....for the individual.
