I'm ready to fit a new rear shock to my 900SS. I thought I'd put on shiny new bolts too. So that I can do the whole swap over at the one time, can anyone tell me if the M10 bolts for it are fine pitch? Cheers. Alex.
Alex, My 92 900ss has coarse M10 x 1.5. What I was going to do because I don't like threads in the ends of the shock was to get over long bolts to give you the a longer unthreaded part and cut them back. Presumably you want to match the bolt at the top that is welded to the frame (bottom one has a nut) They seem to be high tensile Socket cap screws so if you look in the Unbrako book you can get a length to suit. Its the "LB" length you want to check and I think the 2 bolts are different lengths, just make sure you don't bottom out on the thread before its nice and tight. Unbrako - About Cheers Gaz
I agree with that Gaz......I have a couple of stainless bolts with long shanks that I will try......after all it is shear that is the likely issue so maybe stainless will be OK just as much as HT. The OEM thread size is M10 x 1.5mm AL
They're high tensile M10 x 1.5 bolts as standard, they're 8.8 grade You can go to 10,5 grade but don't be tempted by 12.1 as most manufacturers are going away from them after brittleness issues. If you want, for ultimate security go for a locking nut. I used a nyloc nut or other you could use some other swanky locking nut like a K-Nut or similar. And always ensure that you have as a minimum two pitches protruding from the end of the nut, or three if you're threadlocking.
Hi, thanks for the replies. Now I'm aware of the thread size. I'm thinking of using A4-80 stainless bolts. They have the required strength and would polish up nicely. Any thoughts on those? Cheers. Alex.
Should be OK Alex.....I can't see any reason why not.....I think mine are A2. Stainless will probably wear quicker than HT though. A tip...never use Loctite and a Nyloc nut in an assembly; or a Nyloc nut with a spring lock washer.........the combination will jam the nut on the thread. AL
