Went to scrub new rubber in & came back minus carbon splash gaurd, looks like a catastrophic failure, I don't have a clue what could have caused this, all mounting Bolts are still tight, has this happend to anyone else?.
Has it sliced your termi or is it just the picture, mine has come loose a couple of times and has been hit by a car while filling up at a petrol station, mine is a genuine dp carbon and while it is a little flexable it seems strong.
Whats the riveted plate on the termi ? pic 2 looks like its has a cut in it,but can see from pic 1 its the back of the plate.Very strange how both support arms have gone, may be you picked up something on your tyre ?????????
The plate states for race use only, I'm not sure about picking something up on the tyre, there are no marks on the tyre whatsoever,
Why not, that's what It would appear to have done. There is no marks scuffs scratches anywhere on the wheel or tyre, I'm of the same frame of mind as you, the one thing I do know is nothing got picked up by the back wheel,
Look at the tears in the carbon fibre, I would reckon that's been ripped from the bike by something getting stuck between the wheel and the splash guard. It doesn't have to be something you could feel when run over as it could have been flat to the road but flipped up at an angle when run over.
I've the same thing happen about 18 months ago. While making some excellent progress down the M3 to a meeting in Hook when I arrived I found the carbon looking very sad. It is more flexible that the plastic and gets pulled into the wheel at high speed or when hitting a bump. It grips the trye and gets ripped off. Mine did some tyre damage to a new PR4 - only just come out.
Perhaps a recall and all these should be removed if there is a potential to cause an accident, glad grippy came out of this ok.
I agree, last year I fitted a new pair of tyres to my 907ie. The first time out on them I stopped at a T-junction half a mile up the road and was enveloped by a cloud of burning rubber smoke. A stone had stuck to the tyre, presumably to the glue where the sticky label had been, got carried round by the tyre until it reached the swinging arm where there wasn't enough space to get through. So it sat there and burned a 1/8" deep groove in the tyre, fortunately right at the edge where it doesn't normally contact the road. If that happened with the carbon hugger I could easily see it getting snapped off.
From the tear fractures running along the top flat face of the box section pices it looks like the direction of force was upward. Good job it didn't jam the r/wheel. Where you flashed/waved at by any motorists/bikers at any point whilst on your ride? They may have seen something and tried to alert you. I had a trucker at some lights waving and pointing at my rear. I didn't fancy him or his mate so left sharpish. Got home to find key-less key stuck in top box keyhole. Doh. For the second time. Double doh
