1098 Rear Sprocket/chain Advice

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by ditchvisitor, Nov 4, 2015.

  1. I've recently put a 14tooth front sprocket on and I'm looking to replace the chain/rear sprocket, having not bought a chain/sprocket before I was looking for a little advice. The bike currently has this on it....

Does that mean I can get a renthal quick replacement? Also what would people recommend, I wouldn't mind a slightly bling setup without breaking the bank.
    Thanks in advance.

  2. Im new to ducati but that looks like a standard sprocket to me, you'd need a quick release carrier as well.

I just put a new chain on today along with a 14t front sprocket. ... itching to see what the difference is but its pissing down :(

  3. How difficult was it to replace the front sprocket and chain? I imagine they have a split link in them?

  4. very easy .... Undo front sprocket before removing chain.
Front sprocket. 1st gear and rear brake on to remove the nut with long handled breaker bar, or a impact torque gun, sprocket then pulls off
Chain, Any link will do but one should look as though the pins in it are hollow, grind the pin heads off flush to the side plate and remove with chain breaker tool.
Replace sprocket and chain and fit rivet link, rivet the link and adjust chain :D easy

  5. Any pointers on which chain and sprockets to go for? Its a bitch to ride at 30mph so was thinking -1 tooth on the front sorts this but the kits I googled state +1 on the rear too, is this what I need? What manufacturer should I be looking at, renolds etc? I don't want to break the bank but want something decent say £150 ish? I am going to need a C spanner too.

  6. I fitted a Tsubaki and Renthal Q/R kit and 14t front on mine recently.
I think it was around 300 quid all in from B&C Express.

  7. Try this site:
    http://www.gearingcommander.com/
Enter your bike and year and it'll load stock values. Then mess around with the gearing to see what sized you want to go to.
I've got JT chain and quick change sprockets (Full disclosure..they're a sponsor). I've been using them for years on different bikes. They have ours in the quick change, but limited sizes.

  8. I bought a JT quick change carrier and sprockets from A site on E Bay. They are very good. Can't say that about the SSS chain though. Going to change the chain for a DID chain
Paid around £150 which should have told me the chain was crap.
I disabled the exhaust valve on my 1098 which I believe has mor to do with low speed running than the sprocket sizes. I still have 15/38 gearing and it runs smoothly at low speed

  9. I spotted a DID gold HD X ring 525 VXGB 98 tooth chain (£65 ish) and was about to pull the trigger. I looked on the DID website and it says suitable for machines up to 900cc although they are listed by sellers to suit a 1098. Very confusing all this. I just want a decent chain and a 14T front sprocket without being confused!

  10. Well they are obviously as thick as two short planks. Perhaps they don't know that an 600cc can produce about 135 bhp and a 1400cc Hardly Davison produces about 65 bhp. The cubic capacity is not the power output.

  11. Well i ordered the tsubaki sigma x ring and a 14 tooth front renthal sprocket from B&C express, thanks rickyx.
Question I have now, Chad at B&C express tells me the chain comes with a hard link and the screw type riveter won't do the job. What method have you guys used please for the hard link connector? He mentioned sledge hammers! Still need to order a c spanner too for the adjustment.

  12. Hi, glad to hear you got what you wanted.
I riveted mine with a centre punch and a block of wood behind the link, resting against the tyre. You don't need a sledge hammer! Normal size hammer is fine - a few sharp blows just to slightly indent the end of the pin.
Done two track days and about 1000 miles and it is perfect. I checked it regularly at first and there was no sign of movement of the link or side plate sideways compared to the adjacent links.
If in doubt, get a bike shop to do it!
    Good luck.

  13. Safety wire the master link if you're in doubt.

  14. How do you do that with a solid pin link?

  16. Has that pin got a groove in it to prevent the lock wire slipping off?

  17. Chain and sprocket arrived this morning from B&C express, good service, nice chap, recommended. I can't find anyone so far with a hard pin riveter so I will give Rickyx's method a go! The Whale tool is the one to have as Tobytyke points out but at £80 and probably never using it again it doesn't make financial sense to a tight arse like me.
