749 Rear Wheel Nut Grease B

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Pierre 66, Jun 16, 2014.

  1. The workshop manual says apply "grease B" to the rear wheel spindle threads, this is listed as Shell Retinax HDX2.
I think I`m right in saying a greased thread needs a lower torque setting than a dry thread, but does it have to be this specific grease or will a smear of say, high temperature lithium grease do the job? I have about a dozen tubes of the stuff in my garage.

I was cursing the biking gods yesterday for the puncture I picked up but I`m not so unhappy now because I found two of the five sprocket nuts were loose.
Those biking gods sure do work in mysterious ways! :)

  2. I've used lithium grease (as per the manual) on my 916 spindle threads but I've also used copper grease, can't see it making much difference?

As for the torque the stated figure should be for a greased thread.

  3. I've always put a smear of whatever is nearest to me on the threads.
Shouldn't be too critical what you use as long as it is grease

  4. Thanks for that guys.
I thought any grease would be ok but it`s nice to hear the same from other people.
I also now get to use my fathers day prezzie from the kids, a big torque wrench. :)

  5. Many torque settings are within a specific range and the ones that aren't are usually for small diameter threads. Therefore grease type should not really affect the outcome too much as you could apply the right grease and say torque a nut to only the minimum when you could go safely up a bit.

I am working on a Suzuki restoration for someone at the moment and the torque settings on that are very wide ranging, on average about 15 nm's between figures and some as much as 30 nm's between minimum and maximum, quite ridiculous really.

  6. All done. Tyre fixed and wheel refitted.
    Life is good.
    Thank again. :upyeah:
