Reason For Failing Mot

  1. I am a little dismayed......my 2010 848 has failed the MOT for...
    ''missing the passenger footrests.''
    The MOT garage have told me that new laws state that if there is a passenger seat then there must be passenger footrests.....
    My bike as never ever had passenger footrests fitted, same garage MOT'd it 2 years ago.
    Apparently my only options are buy some footrests or fit a cowl to stop the seat being used..
    I hate to question the garage, but is this correct.

  3. When did it become law, cos same garage MOT'd it in 2014
     
  4. More than 10 years ago but more likely more than 50 :)
    Don't know but I know it was law in 2007.

  5. its been law forever.. or near abouts. but most testers wouldnt enforce it. you have met a c u next tuesday.. afix something that resembles footrests and looks safe n try again

  8. There is a pair of pillion foot rests on Ebay but no buy-it-now option, sounds like the tester is having trouble and being monitored so personally I would make sure the strap was removed and try somewhere else.

    Would fitting a tailpack work? It would render the pillion seat incapable of carrying a passenger as the bike is presented.
     
  9. They are correct, but it's very pedantic.

    Take the seat pad off this year for the re-test and find another MOT station next year.

  10. Take it somewhere else. Avoid car MOT stations. They usually don't know much about gikes and they tend to be the most pedantic. Get mine MOT'd at an independent bike workshop and I take the footrests and a 10X8 number plate in a rucksack. Makes him feel better in case there's a Ministry inspection.

  11. I take my bikes to the same station every year. I have a good relationship with the guy and he's never failed a bike for Termi's, 7x5 number plate or having no reflector. He's more interested in safety and always goes over brakes, tyres etc.

    He sees the bikes are well taken care of and knows me, knows the bikes and knows I'm not bringing a pile of scrap to him to sell on once it has an MOT.

  13. There was a tweak to the test wording, maybe 18 months or so ago. If there's a pillion seat, then the pegs have to be there.
    If the bike is a mono, or has a hard cover over or in place of the seat pad, then the pegs aren't needed.
     
  14. My SS has the OEM seat and cowl fitted; but it has high level cans and the pillion footrests won't fit.........When I first got the bike in 2009, the tester insisted that footrests should be fitted because the cowl can be removed easily to expose the pillion seat.

    He adopted the same view through all the tests until last year..........I had made footrests to fit, but he knew I always removed them when I got home again.

    Last year I forgot to fit them and either he missed them or had changed his view..........I said nuffing.
     
  15. its a time of test thing. the tester aint allowed to give a dam about what happens before or after the test procedure. he/she cant remove anything during the test and if he/she cant see it he cant test it. pass and advise.
    dont forget folks when your slagging your tester, his ticket and livelihood are at stake every time he logs on.

  18. When you have a flat long seat how do they argue it is a seat for two? My enduro bike has a seat longer than anything.
     
  19. I hope it wasn't Kev's place off Lawrence Street as they have a 1098 in and could have lent or pretended to lend the pegs from.
