Good Afternoon All, First time poster, long time petrolhead. I was wondering if someone could possibly provide some assistance to what is a very unfortunate situation involving my late father and his 1199 Panigale. About 6 months ago my father was involved in a fatal road accident on his 1199 Panigale, the bike itself was an 08/13 built bike, was unmodified, had full Ducati service history and was owned by a true enthusiast. My father had been riding bikes for over 40 years and took good care of it. The fatal accident enquiry (Scottish Law requirement) has not yet concluded - however - at present the outlook is that the accident was caused by screw retaining the swing arm to the rear suspension snapping under poor tensile strength build quality causing the rear end of the bike to collapse on itself and my father to loose control (conditions were clear, road was dry, he was estimated to be 15mph under the speed limit). As I understand a recall for this exact problem was issued for 1199 Panigales built between 01/11 and 06/12 - no earlier, no later. My question to the forum is - have any 1199 Panigale owners heard of, or experienced this happening to a bike built after Ducati's recall build time? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and if you have any questions I will do my best to answer.
wow thats shit mate, sorry for your loss, and would interested in what people post on this. Unfortunately have no answer to your question.
The recall was for bolts securing the linkage becoming loose not for a strength issue from what I can see of the recall text (see below). Not sure if that alters anything if it was still the cause of his crash. Sorry to hear about your father. Ducati is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 1199 Panigale motorcycles manufactured from March 16, 2012, through July 12, 2012. The right and left swingarm shaft pivots can loosen. Consequence: The swingarm shaft pivots can loosen from the swingarm which can lead to loss of control of the motorcycle, increasing the risk of personal injury.
Yes, there were problems with those parts. It was posted on here a few days ago, with VIN numbers etc. Along with an updated list iirc Truly sorry to hear that this might've cost someone their life.
Guys thanks very much for the condolences - its greatly appreciated. Spoonz I've reviewed the recall information and I completely overlooked that - thank you for bringing it to my attention. It doesn't state it 'snaps' - only 'weren't torqued up correctly' and ducati dad thank you I'll review that thread as well.
I think this is something of extreme importance personally, not only because it 'could be' found as the primary reason for the initial loss of control by Ryans late fathers bike, but because so many other panigales are in circulation. I don't want to come across selfish on a thread by Ryan, especially given the circumstances, although I've already given my sincere condolences on the other thread. But, whilst I appreciate this is apparently a rare occurrence, it's a bike I'm looking to buy myself very soon and there are enough dangers on the road as it is being a biker, let alone having the worry about a single bolt bringing everything to a catastrophic end. For example, if these bolts have snapped in the past, which judging by a couple of online posts on various forums seems to be the case, then what have they changed in terms of production ? Have they just changed the bolt? If so for what? Have they engineered any secondary backup which stops it happening on later models? I'll be watching this one with interest. Ryan, once again, my condolences.
Very sad to read this. Is this the bolt which fixes the bottom of the shaft to the swingarm? Spoons mentions the swingarm pivot pinch bolts also I've had various bolts come loose so I spanner check everything I can see as part of regular maintenance The pinch bolts are only 8nm or something ridiculous but I had a lot of vibes on right footpeg and discovered this bolt had loosened. I retorqued the bolt and the buzzing went away
