The reccomended oil for the multi is shell ultra 4 15w 50 fully synthetic. I noticed whilst searching on eBay for oil and filter it comes up with loads of different options including semi Synthetic 10w 40...which are mush cheaper....So confusing. Can any one shine some light on the subject please...
10w 40 is thinner and works for lower temp. Ducati recommends fully synth. Not an oil expert, but from what I know, fully synth oils are more homogenous in thickness with miniscule impurities; mainly sulphur. Generally used with high performance modern engines. There are some merits to using semi-synth (google running-in engines) but may void your warrenty if there is a problem.
Go fully synthetic as your oil also lubricates the gear box and gets a good thrashing...10w-40w would be fine in our cooler climate try this link for a more in depth study Motor Oil for Dummies - no insults intended.
a confusing and controversial subject.. Despite Ducati supplying wet-clutch bikes with fully synthetic* oil as standard, some owners have experienced problems with varying degrees of clutch slip thought to be down to the oil type. The use of semi-synthetic is thought of as a compromise less likely to result in clutch slip problems. As to why some should suffer clutch slip and others not - the jury is out but certainly the time that the plates are exposed to the oil is a factor and slippage is thought to be slightly more likely if the bike has stood unused for 'a period' giving the oil a chance to totally saturate the friction plate material. One thing you probably knew already - don't be tempted to use non-motorcycle spec semi or fully synthetic oil. *exists in many forms alone under this term.
