749 Red Key Buggerage

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by RC1, Dec 8, 2024.

  1. Tried red key first time since bought bike 3 years ago. Electrics fire up and fuel pump primes bit engine no turn over. Use black key and all works as should

Had my red key died through lack of use?

    What to do?

  2. Right mechanical code (pattern key cut), wrong transponder chip in red key. Key being cut correctly allows ignition to be switched on, wrong transponder code does not allow immo to cancel.
Unfortunately the only way to confirm things is to take the dash apart (tacho needle off) to gain access to immo chip. This will identify the red key and 2 x black key transponder codes. Costs about £160 to do this at Scorpio electronics.

  3. Taking that tacho needle off and repositioning it in the correct location (no fixed position on tacho shaft) is a bit of a job.

  4. Even though I have the kit to read the immo chip, removing the tacho or speedo needles terrifies me. I would rather pay someone to do it. If only all dashboards were like the 848/1098/1198.

  5. I jumped in with both feet when I swapped out my good internals into a case that didn't have a cracked set of screens.
Took a bit of figuring out but I managed to do it without breaking anything.
