1200 "red Switch Not Released"

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Tripletrouble, May 19, 2014.

  1. I'm off to the continent in a couple of weeks so have been performing the usual checks.
The bike runs, starts, the passive key works etc.
However I thought I'd check the tank button just to make sure.
When I press that, I get the above message flashing in the round display.
I've set my pin as I had a new dash fitted a couple of months ago under warranty and nothing else has changed.
The bike doesn't discharge the battery, the ignition "switch" works fine etc, etc.
Anyone else had this? I've checked the plug going into the dash and that is nice and tight.
    Any suggestions (2011 bike)

  2. Update.
I reset my pin again. After much judicious wiggle in sliding switch and hard pressing of the starter button it still wouldn't work.
Just kept pressing it repeatedly and then the bike came alive and asked for the pin. Entered it and it worked.
Repeated this several times and each time it worked. May have just been sticky contacts on the emergency switch.
It may be worth checking yours just in case.

  3. Had the same issues with mine and they replaced the switch under warranty (as well as all the other ones!)

  4. My bike is out of warranty.

  5. hmm, sounds like you need a new switch, that's 49 gbp or something like that plus a good sunday afternoon or two :

take fairings and tank cover off and beak off, disconnect tank hoses and fuel feeds/connector at the bottom, lift and remove.

wiring loom at the centre, squareish block, replace switch and reconnect with new, care with wire routing back, replace all tie rounds, replace and reconnect tank and refit fairings and beak back. Not huge job but give yourself a good one or two afternoons to get through it all - have online manual handy to see where all the screws are.

(two things from memory to watch out for...fuse box on left is attached by two "hidden screws" under the block switches! onto tank when all fairings are off and the tank is the last thing to remove, and air intake on right where air filter needs is connected to fairing by a rubber hose, take care to replace rubber hose else performance will decrease).

    bugs

  6. I can have the tank off In just over an hour but have absolutely no inclination whatsoever to do so!
Thanks for the tips Bugs but I've been there when I fitted the Brembo M4s.
I'll live with it and ensure I have the red key with me when abroad.

  7. Had the same message last week whilst in France after bike was outside in a heavy thunderstorm, could not get ignition to stay on, eventually got it working, ran fine, got message again when turned engine off ?

Was going to spray some WD40 into it, but it has gone away for now, even after a 4 hr ride back yesterday in torrential rain.

  8. So, my bloody ignition "slider" has just completely failed upon return from Silverstone. Does anyone happen to have the part number please?

  9. just phone protwins (Godstone)...they'll give you a price and the number.

  10. And they can get parts in 24 hrs usually...

  11. It took Dave at Snells about 10 mins to change my switch, so what you are doing for the others hours, alone, in your garage is not for anyone else but you...and your internet provider ;)

  12. ask AndyW...and we've all seen the results!

  13. £51.25. Not wallet breaking but still a bloody nuisance

  14. 10 mins wtf - the switch is under the tank which is under the fairing...sounds like a suspiciously done job if at all. (love snells but really 10 mins ....!)

  15. Or they have some a few ;)

And its not like you cN say 'its done' when the switch turns the bike on and off

  16. Job completed. 2 and a half hours from start to finish. The tank doesn't have to come off. If you remove the front tank bolts then the rears and disconnect the fuel lines, free the loom and fuses on the LHS and fuel pump wiring you can move the tank far back enough to get to the switch wire coupling.
It's a PITA to be honest but not beyond the ability of a reasonable Allen key spinner! Bike up and running again now.

  17. 2 1/2 not bad, not bad.
