I’m contemplating another project:reframing a 916 which has a damaged frame. I’ve come across this guy selling ‘blank’ frames in Italy (“put your own numbers on”) and wonder what the legality/process this would involve here in the UK? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/28540937...RBIPIm1Qh6&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
As long as it's stamped with the correct number and the old frame is destroyed I don't see a problem. You will have find a friendly dealer with the kit to stamp the frame number though which might be a problem.
No “friendly dealers” near me! Although M&S Newcastle might still have some. I might try talking to them next week. Thanks.
When my '94 900SS suffered the cracked frame syndrome in '99, the dealer who did the change considered it my problem to sort out getting the frame number on the new blank frame, so I bought some number stamps from Mr Snap On, put the last six numbers on the head tube and lacquered them over. It has never been a problem at MOT time and I don't expect to have a problem when selling because it is not leaving my garage.
i did this to my 996 frame that split back in 2001, new frame from Ducati and cut off the headstock from the old frame to show the local Tuv inspector that the frame was destroyed.. same Vin punched on the New frame.
I have a new 998 frame in my workshop that was originally going to be used for a bike to be run at the TT. It came straight from Ducati and has no headstock number.
I wonder if doing it with an engraver would also be acceptable to MOT testers ? Some of those notorious frame failures cracked at the engine mounting points , and the sudden load shift would crack the engine case(s) at the same time . Does the engine also need to have the number on it ?
yes, as long as its the right number and only one chassis number you can get it on there how ever you like. engine doesnt need numbers for the mot
