748 Reg/rec Connection Question

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Chris.King1, Jan 2, 2019.

  1. So got my new R/R from a Triumph and connecting leads...only to find the connections on the bike side has male and the other female.

I was under the impression that both on the bike side are always the same...both female???...So checking my R/R off my bike, I can see they have switched the 2 yellow wires connection around...its male the bike side and female the lead to R/R side. Also has been soldered, so guessing some time in the past there has been a problem.

This means the new leads will have to be reheaded (3 black on R/R to 2 yellow bike side)...obviously one black will be redundant. Also the original on bike has some weird plastic connection that doesn't even fit a spare SHUNT one I have. Anyway, image showed the new lead which needs female heads on.

  2. Good opportunity to upgrade the Power side to Metri-Pack 280 connectors.
With the other connector put a cable tie round them to keep connected as they can work loose.

  3. I solder mine. To keep resistence to a minimum. The connections can get very hot and occasionally burn out leading to RR failures. Solder and good quality heat shrink. I would also consider replacing the yellows with thicker core cable and a stator rewind. I did mine quite a few years back and reduced my RR failures significantly. Im still on my Electrex unit and when that goes (it will eventually) a mosfet one will take its place. However it lasted for 10yrs instead of the 1-2 per yr prior to rewind and cable mods. I got very adept at swapping them over at side of road and used to carry a spare under my seat unit. Im on my last spare now as I blew it only a yr or so ago starting the bike whilst still plugged into optimate, it didnt like that and took battery with it too. When my RR's failed they also used to take the battery with it. Only thing that ever goes wrong with it. No block connectors. Solder everytime.

    98 916 Bip.

  4. I will be replacing the 2 yellow wires with a thicker core, been reading that if replacing SHUNT with MOSFET, then you also need to replace with thicker wire, as you say.

I did read MOSFET puts a higher load on one of the phases, went into all this electrical tech...but I think it can't be any worse than the original.
