Regulator Wiring Help

  1. My regulator is fried (15.8v to the battery when running) so ordered an OEM replacement from Stein Dinse. Came to fit it, and clearly a previous owner has been in here with the wire cutters and crimp fittings (aargh!).

The way it’s currently wired, the red cable goes directly from the regulator to the battery, but the wiring diagram shows it going through a 30 amp fuse (charging circuit fuse). Is this safe? Is it a common mod? Should I try to reinstate the fuse (somehow, don’t know if the part is even still on the bike)?

  2. It’s a 1995 900SS. I’ve figured out the one on the bike is an RR51, so I’ve ordered one of those as it’ll swap straight in, and I’ve put the brand new OEM one on eBay to recoup some cash. I had a look to see if the old wiring was neatly tucked away somewhere but it looks like it’s all been cut out of the loom so this is the easiest way forward.

  3. As Sev says about wiring an RR51,
Electrex also produce a mosfet RR51.
I have one of those under the seat of my 748. As soon as the charge light comes on I will swap it.
