Hi all, I'd like to understand whether my 1199 Panigale has character or if it's genuinely a 'Friday afternoon' machine. Bought new in October 2013, in the last 15 months whilst covering around 10,000 miles, I have broken down half a dozen times needing recovery on four of these. She's spent around three months in the Ducati garage being repaired with the replacement of - amongst other things - front wheel bearings, wiring loom, neutral switch, lower radiator, handle bar switches and several engine components. I've arrived at the point of a sense of humour failure with the latest breakdown being last night. To be fair, I did manage to get to my garage before the engine finally gave out so I didn't need another trip with Ducati recovery. Can't believe I think that result as a positive outcome!! I'd be interested in any experiences you all may have in particular from those that ride these magnificant machines at night and in wet conditions. Thanks in advance. Matt
Quite surprised to be honest. I originally bought a second hand 2012 model and did have some issues with that one; coil pack blew, some electrical gremlins, and smashed the clutch basket due to previous owner/Croydon dealers not tightening the inner clutch cover screws properly on a previous repair I was not informed about. I learnt from that one not to buy a first generation model of any machine (or go near Croydon Ducati)! I traded in for a 2015 model from the fine people at Snell Performance in september and have done 4000 miles across Europe in all weathers and late into the night , including some exceptionally heavy lightning and rain storms, and it's been 100% reliable. The trip included everything from endless motorway plodding, Autobahn near top end speeds, racetrack like riding on the B500 and across the Alps and very high temperatures down in Southern Italy.
Had mine new in May 2012 overall fantastic no garage queen either well used 10,000 miles on now * small oil leak off front sprocket , easy fix by dealer *clocks replace *gear censor Still wouldn't hesitate to buy , in fact going to trade in for 2015 model soon. Rode all the other suspects but in my opinion Pani still the best.
Hi all, Thanks for your responses, It's good to hear that this appears to be more of a one off than the norm. I was wondering if I should have gone for the s1000rr or RSV4 or KTM. The jury is still out although the 1199 rocks when she's running well .
Im not surprised your having a sense of humour failure with the bike as its sounds a very disappointing experience. Not really very good for a premium brand and doesn't make me want to sell my older ducati anytime soon.Hopefully things will improve with Audi behind them or maybe in the good old ducati tradition the second gen will have all the gremlins ironed out. Maybe buying a 1299 is the answer.Or look at it this way now you have almost a completely new bike the amount of stuff thats been changed with a bit of luck it might start running right. Id be looking at other brands also like you if that was the experience I got after shelling out all that hard earned cash.
working in dealerships most of my working life you see this from time to time. 100 puntos with out a problem, then you get one that has one issue after another. a total pisser for the owner.
I have covered 7,600 miles on my 2013 1199s, although I am a fair weather rider its been faultless. Would not hesitate to buy another one, sounds like you were very unlucky with yours.
I had the same with one of the very first KTM RC8s. The shop seemed to have it as many weekends as I did. Chopped it back in very quickly and came back to Dukes. Was soul destroying losing nearly a whole riding season to faults.
Sounds like you're bang out of luck on this one. I don't own a Panigale but from what I understand the reliability is pretty good. As finm pointed out, you get the odd shitter rolling off the line and it sounds like you've got it. Bugger. I'd chop it in if I were you. It happens with cars too. My wife bought a new C180 class Merc back in 02. What a cluster fuck that turned into! After 14 months of pain they replaced it.....
Well to offer a couple of facets. A friend of a friend (Ive never met him) has done a stupid amount of miles on his panigale and its been fine - even to the point where the riders mechanics in Bristol said they'd never serviced a panigale with the higher milage that was that new before... Ive got an RSV4 - had one for 2 1/2 years now and apart from the rocker covers needing replacing (apparently if the previous owner was quick enough then it could have been done under warranty) but no - down to me, they leaked, due to bad design - new ones were about 200 quid with the gaskets and a bit of a pain to fit. Apart from that no issues (and mines the early pre aprc one) which is supposed to be the worst from a reliability point of view. Yes, its had money spent on it but, the least out of the 3 bikes that I own, samco kit, hel lines, stainless and titanium fixings. It goes like a rocket and I love it (the only way to describe it is like a 1 litre 350LC) that kind of power delivery....if I had to sell it and get another bike - id get a newer one... Just trying to get some dyno time sorted out for it next...
I sympathise with you..the panigale i bought was my 1st ducati and i have had a very similar experience. My list of work done is 1) new clocks at 1200 miles when i bought it..i am 2nd owner 2) one week later clutch slave failed...back to get fixed 3) rocker covers leaking oil...wouldnt start...dealer stripped it down and barrel liners were ripped to crap...new engine fitted at 4500 miles 4) front forks pogo like a mother. ..new forks fitted 5) rear shock squeaking like a mouse and heat shields on exhaust rattling and wadding falling out..new rear shock and exhausts fitted Thankfully it all under warranty...inconvenience definately..although ducati dealers i have used were great 10000 miles in total... Would i buy another ducati....jury still out Kwack
Bloody hell, thats some pain. At least good to see everything has been sorted. One thing that I have learnt the hard way with the Panigales is that you are treated a lot better by Ducati if you have bought a new bike than if you got one thats a couple years old regardless of warranty.
Mine has had a couple of issues. The first was a wiring problem (the right indicator and trip meter resets wouldn't work). The second was a fuel injector problem, the bike occasionally wouldn't rev past 6,000rpm. When it did manage to do it the "engine" warning message would be displayed on the dash. It was repaired under warranty.
my 1199s , purchased new in march 13,used daily ever since for commuting in london - all weathers : 1. heat shield melted(1) 2.heatshield melted(2) 3. heatshield melted(3) 4. indicator issue 5. oil leak 6. gear indicator problem 7. chain sprocket upgrade kit installed as original one was shit 8. constant loss of pressure in front brake (possibly master cylinder needs replacing) 9. r/h side bottom fairing replaced 4 times will they grinded down bit of exhaust which was melting plastic 10. rear hugger badly discoloured and melted - replaced for carbon needless to say - I've purchased warranty extension !
