Hi I took the foot pegs off to change the rear tyre and I think the bike looks better without . I don't take a pillion. Is it legal I seem to remember reading somewhere they had to be fitted. Is this fact or Bo**ocks . Thanks
MOT rules technically mean that if you a rear seat you should have them fit to pass. This includes having a rear seat cowl but the tester would have to be a git to fail you on the cowl front.
If your bike had a pillion seat and pillion foot pegs as standard, they are required to be fitted for an MoT. If you remove the foot pegs but retain the pillion seat, it is obvious they are not fitted so you might be unlucky get picked up on it if you are stopped. Aftemarket pillion seat cowls that eliminate the pillion seat are available. Andy
It’s legal unless you take a pillion ... but as above , you’ll need to refit to pass an MOT unless the rear seat is removed or covered by a cowl
My MOT tester said a seat covered by a cowl is still a seat and that it would need to be removed completely with a proper replacement seat hump
I just bolt the rear pegs back on the 916 Bip for the MOT then take 'em off again when I get home. Sorted!
interesting. My R1 has had its rear pegs removed since new (08) and never ever been mentioned at MoT time. Infact my insurance for this bike does not cover pillions. I can understand it might be a construction and use issue, but they aren't structural, so personally I wouldn't worry about it (and I don't on my bike ). I never had the rear pegs on my 996 or 998 either, sold both of the bikes with them in a bag
I have a single seat on the 748 and it's always passed an MOT without the pillion pegs, although one MOT tester did mention about pillion pegs once - ie, that they should really be fitted if you have a dual seat. I don't use them anymore I have also taken the pillion pegs off the Hypermotard and fitted the carbon guards instead, along with the single exhaust but kept the (DP comfort) seat which is obviously a dual seat. But it's never failed an MOT. Go figure!
Generally I would agree with your bollocks theory. As mentioned above the tester would have to be a right "by the book" tosser to fail something which is not safety related. In common with others on this thread I ran my 916 Bip for may years with no footpegs and it was never a problem for several different MOT stations.
It does indeed completely depend on the tester, like a race pipe or small plate. Nearly had a fail once because my pillion peg on one side, was seized through inactivity. Had to wrestle it down to get the pass.
