The top tubes of my 916 forks have corroded so I acquired a set in good condition but are later ones with wider spacing on caliper mounting. I'm stripping them down to swap over the top tubes onto my fork bottoms. How the hell do you undo the fork caps without marking the red anodising? I used a 32mm 12 point socket which made a right mess. So tried wrapping cap with tape but the socket cut through the tape and marked it. Would a 6 point socket with tape not mark it? Or is there a special plastic socket available?
Use a hex 6 point socket with tape around the nut. Slacken of the top yoke clamp screws before trying to loosen the nuts, they will undo much easier
I’ve seen cellophane used to protect the anodising, as Derek has stated better to be using a 6 point socket though.
