999 Removing Paint From A Carbon Fibre Tank.

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by yellowducmaniac, May 27, 2016.

  1. I've decided to strip the paint off my Carbon fibre tank down to the weave and get it lacquered, can anyone recommend something to strip the paint off with, i seem to think I read somewhere that normal paint stripper can damage the surface of the carbon, if it means sanding it all off by hand ,so be it.

  2. ,
As stated in the OP...carbon fibre, if there are different types of CF, forgive my ignorance.
    Its a 23L Kamna.

  3. I have repainted a few carbonfibre seats and I did this by rubbing down to the lacquer by hand. If you want to clearcoat any part of it then It's very easy to cut through the lacquer into the carbonfibre, and if you scratch the carbonfibre badly enough underneath then you can see the scratches even when item has been relacquered in clearcoat.

If you are just going to repaint it and have no clearcoat showing then it's not so important and that is a fairly straightforward job. Check for any reaction before you start to paint it fully though on a small test area out of sight.

  4. Was aiming to do it myself, just remove the paint and clear coat it ,I think if its a carbon tank it should be shown off and not hidden under paint...Just my opinion tho.
Looks like i'd better get my wrist ready for some serious rubbing....mind you I can always change hands.:flushed:....seriously though ,what grade emery paper should I start at ?,i don't want to rip into the CF.

  5. I blagged a CF front mudguard that been poorly painted over lacquer and managed to clean the paint off with a blade. It was like using a spokeshave and lifted a strips of paint. Some of the original lacquer was good enough to leave, some I wrapped. Don't be tempted to use a heat gun to soften the paint, it softens the carbon fibre as well. It will be a long, laborious and messy job, are you really sure you want to do it ? Andy

  6. Here's my 2pence worth.
Carbon is only worth showing off if it's been laid up by a bloody good laminator. In a quality mould. With quality materials. (Ie pre-preg Carbon with a high resin content)
I can see your point wanting to show it off. However. After a mission of flatting and prepping. You could be disappointed with the end result.
But bear in mind I have to work with the bloody stuff on a day in day out basis so I'm biased against crp.
    That's your fire pi$$ed on.
